You’re starting your day early, hurrying between classes or briefly winding down before hours of studying. Each day is a balancing act and (admit it!) you’re usually thinking up an excuse or two to skip the gym. Some are reasonable but most are… creative. Stay strong, Collegiettes! Netflix isn’t going anywhere.

1. I already showered.

It should be a disclaimer at the bottom of all college applications. When you’re a college student, showering isn’t a relaxing way to end your day. You grudgingly sacrifice those 10 minutes (or, for my steadfast suitemate, an hour) each day, all the while thinking about the assignment you could be finishing or sleep you could be getting. So what if you’ve already showered? Workout and shower again. Take a deep breath and appreciate the relaxing respite.

2. I just ate.

When you’re working out, the last thing you need is the sloshing and gurgling of a hearty lunch in your stomach. Do you remember what your cautious aunt told you at the beach? While there is most likely little truth to her old wives’ tale, wait the half hour before diving into your exercise. Just be sure you go.

3. I forgot my hair elastic.

Did you forget or did you “forget”? Take a look around – do your fellow gym-goers have any to spare? If not, suck it up and let it hang.

4. I’m too stressed.

Just when you build up enough motivation to put on your Nikes and hit the treadmill you remember the paper and readings you have to finish… for tomorrow. You consider your options and your resolve begins to falter: no gym means more time to finish your work which equals? Sleep. Stay motivated and relieve that stress! The gym is a break from your hectic day – take advantage of it.

5. I’m not fit enough.

Come clean. We’ve all seen (and enviously admired) those size 0 fitness goddesses in their Lululemon shorts and Nike fitness tanks. Don’t fret – for many of us, this body image is unrealistic. Do rewind: everyone has to start somewhere. Pull yourself from the couch and go!

6. I don’t own any Lululemon.

Odds are most Collegiettes aren’t willing to dish out close to $100.00 on that desirable spandex. Channel your inner discount diva and hunt down designer brand bargains at T.J. Maxx or Marshalls. Does it really matter what you’re wearing? You’re working up a sweat anyway!

7. I took the stairs.

Good for you! Sometimes taking the stairs can feel like one of the day’s biggest feats. BUT, set your aims a little higher. Hit the gym for a cardio-intensive workout that will get your lungs pumping. Now that’s something to brag about.

8. My stomach hurts…

Hmmm, are you sure about that? Maybe it’s dread that’s turning your stomach. If you think that’s bad, remember the regret that sinks in when you haven’t gone. That’s what I thought. Get moving!

9. I can’t find my headphones.

From Queen Bey’s booty bumping beats to Katy Perry’s catchy anthems, you’ve got your own mix of upbeat, energized workout songs – a.k.a distractions from your aching muscles and heavy breathing. Don’t hit the panic button – ask to borrow a friend’s headphones for the hour.

10. I’m addicted to Orange Is the New Black!

Okay, by now most of us have been bit by the Netflix bug. Recover your self-control: a.k.a download the app and watch while you run.
