If You Say You Don’t Need to De-Stress, You’re Lying

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

Life can come at you like a tornado sometimes. Things can get hectic very quickly. It is important to know some methods to cope with stress at times like this. Here are 10 easy tricks you should know when it is time to de-stress:

  1. Take 10 deep breaths. Sometimes, when anxiety rises and the millions of things you have to do are all that consumes your brain, all you need to do is breathe. Taking 10 deep breaths can help your body calm down so that you can focus and accomplish whatever it may be that is stressing you out.

  2. Call a friend. Storing all of your emotions inside is a recipe for disaster. Talking out loud about everything going on in your life can really help put things into a better perspective. What helps even more is having someone there to give advice and motivate you!

  3. Make a to do list. Making a to do list is what helps me get through my daily life as a stressed out, crazy busy college student. It is so helpful to make a list of things you want to accomplish by the end of the day. Also, the small feeling of joy every time you check off a task is so rewarding!

  4. Go for a car ride. Grab some friends, get in your car, and just drive! You don’t need a destination, roll your windows down, and just soak in your surroundings. Turn the volume up on your car radio, stop thinking, and just let go of all your stress!

  5. Clean your room. Waking up to a messy room can cause stress before your day even begins. Having a clean room will make you feel fresh and ready to seize the day. Also, I like to look at cleaning my room as some me time! So, blast some music and relax till your room looks spotless.

  6. Take a shower. Sometimes, when life is crazy, all you need is a little pick-me-up. Taking a shower will help you feel fresh and clean. The warm water will be calming, and it is a nice 15 minutes where you can just relax.

  7. Watch a 30 minute Netflix episode. After running around all day doing a million things, a quick Netflix episode before bed can be a nice reward. I look forward to my quick Netflix episode before bed every day, and it helps me keep pushing to accomplish all that I have to do!

  8. Paint. Spending some time doing some arts and crafts is a great way to unwind. Play some music, grab a paint brush, and just relax! Shifting your focus to painting can help let go of all of your stress for a little.

  9. Workout. Finding time in your schedule to go to the gym can be difficult, but the benefits are worth it. After finishing a workout, you will feel amazing, and motivated to accomplish the rest of the things you need to do!

  10. Dance, Dance, Dance! When life seems almost impossible, stop everything you are doing, put on your favorite song, and dance! Pump up the volume, and dance until you forget what is stressing you out.
