Natural Ways to De-stress During Midterms

Natural Ways to De-stress During Midterms

It’s Midterms Week! Aka the second most stressful time of the semester. If you are feeling stressed or anxious like me, try some of these tips I put together on how to naturally relax and calm those nerves.

First off, get some good quality essential oils, specifically lavender and peppermint. I know, I am already getting too holistic with my first tip… but trust me this one works! Lavender is known for its relaxing effect on the body. If you want to be extra, DIY a room spray with water, witch hazel, and lavender oil. You can even spray your bedding with this mixture before bed for a more peaceful sleep. Peppermint oil can be used on the temples to combat stress headaches. Once you find your favorite essential oils, mix up a blend that suits your senses and add a few drops to an essential oil diffuser. I have this mini diffuser for my dorm room and it works perfectly! “This Mini diffuser” https://www.amazon.com/SpaRoom-Aromafier-Fragrance-Essential-Aromatherapy/dp/B00I5W7NJ6

Secondly, stay away from caffeine! Coffee lovers may eye roll at this tip, but switching to herbal teas is a better alternative when your body is under more stress than usual. I love Sleepytime Tea because it has calming chamomile and is caffeine free so you can sip on it late at night (without getting jittery) while you are still cramming for exams.

Thirdly, take a break! You deserve some time off from studying nonstop. Take a walk outside, get some fresh air, hang with friends, or color a page from that “adult coloring book” everyone receives as a gift and just let your mind rest. I am always in a better mood when I take some time out of each day to do something that makes me happy. Plus taking a break will help you be more productive and positive when studying for midterms again.

Lastly, make a playlist with soft music. Whether you prefer classical, instrumental pop, or nature sounds, try this out! Whenever I listen to my favorite songs I get distracted and start singing more than studying, so anything without words works for me and helps me stay more focused on the task at hand.

Everyone has different coping methods for their stressful schedules, but I hope some of these tips will work out for you like they do for me! Just remember that a grade will never define you as a person so lift some weight off of yourself and just do the best you can. Good luck to you this week and try to stress less!

St Vincent '18

Hello there! I am the Campus Correspondent of the Her Campus chapter at Saint Vincent College. As a senior psychology major, I've made the most of my time in undergrad and am excited for all the doors I have opening ahead of me. I can definitely thank Her Campus for giving me invaluable skills. As a future psychologist, I hope that my articles (and the chapter's) are able to make you feel empowered, motivate you to start a conversation, and be kind. As a hero of mine has said, "If you do not take control over your time and your life, other people will gobble it up. If you don't prioritize yourself, you constantly start falling lower and lower on your list."- Michelle Obama. Be the change you want to see in the world, and smile. Always smile!
