Unique Ways to Workout Inside

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

I hate getting up the courage and energy to work out. It is easy to feel like everyone is staring at me struggling, horrified that they are hearing my heavy breathing. It’s like I’m shouting to the world, “I suck at running! OK?!” It can especially be easy to come up with excuses when it’s usually freezing and windy in Pittsburgh. I want to keep up my New Year’s resolution though: get fit. Therefore, I thought of some creative ways to workout indoors, so I can’t make excuses about not exercising due to the unpredictable weather of Pittsburgh!

Blogilates

Cassey Ho is the creator of this 3.5 million subscriber Youtube channel. It’s full of uplifting messages, monthly challenges, quick workouts, and tips that get you on the track to living a healthy lifestyle! Best part is you can do it from the comfort of your own living room.

TV Workout Game

These are the best because I love watching shows on Netflix. It can be really easy to just sit and eat while watching my favorite show. Why not work out while doing it? They’re simple, fast, and effective.

Cathedral Steps

I’ve heard of friends doing this for ROTC. It’s brutal, takes time, and is not for the faint-hearted. Our beloved Cathy has 42 stories but only 36 are accessible. Need a workout to make you feel like a beast, and an efficient way to work out those glutes? Climb the 36 flights of steps up and down!

Cleaning

This sounds lame, but I get a joy out of cleaning; however, I never considered it exercise until now. You can make it a competition with yourself: see if you can finish vacuuming before the end of a four-minute song, or if you can finish cleaning the bathroom in under 3 songs. You’ll push yourself more to get it done, and work your muscles to their full potential. Bonus: your space will be clean!

Dance Party of 1

Dancing has multiple benefits. I love to especially dance on my own around my dorm to pump-up music. Make a fool of yourself! You’ll be out of breath and sweaty in no time. Dancing also releases endorphins, in some cases causing euphoria1. Iff you’re having a bad day and haven’t worked out, I’d recommend putting on some happy music and dancing like no one is watching.

Playing an Instrument2

I used to play violin and I’m pretty sure that’s why my shoulders look so great now. There is a fair amount of upper body strength required to play anything like the guitar, violin, flute, etc. Fun fact: your brain can burn calories too! Find out more here.

Sex

I think this one is self-explanatory. You burn a lot of calories, release endorphins and bond with your partner. Need a playlist to help set the mood? Find one on Spotify like this one!

Working out this year doesn’t have to be grueling, or traditional. You can get fit in multiple ways on your own, or with a friend without even realizing it. Try one of these next time you want to get fit, and let us know what you think!
