During the week of Feb. 3, Michigan State University hosts a week full of events to prepare undergraduates for their future careers.
The week has a different event every day, including a resume workshop, alumni panel, and at the end of the week, a career fair.
I’ve spent the last few weeks preparing for these events, so here’s how I’m going about this week.
Career fair
For the career fair I’ve asked a lot of questions and received a lot of great advice.
- Print out your resume
- Attend in business casual clothes
- Keep your head up
- Research the companies
I plan on following all of these tips, and the one I’m looking forward to the most is printing out my resume. Whenever I submit a resume online, it is a simple document that doesn’t have much design to it. With the career fair on its way, I’m taking advantage of the design skills I’ve learned at MSU and I’m bringing in a more colorful and fun resume for employers. It isn’t recommended to submit a bright resume online, but I was told to do that for in person career fairs and I’m excited to see the reaction.
Alumni panel
I have been preparing for this event by researching the alumni on LinkedIn.
I’ve noted that there are a few businesses that I hope to find myself working at in the future, so I have questions written down specifically for the alumni who are employed at those networks.
Take notes! This semester has been full of notes so far, and we’re only a few weeks in. I find that writing everything down keeps my brain active and helps me remember the important things I’ve heard.
Resume workshop & LinkedIn
I’m no professional, but that’s why these workshops exist! I went in not feeling so great about my resume and LinkedIn, and came out feeling way more confident.
Some tips I was given: Keep a short elevator pitch, stay active on LinkedIn, interact with your network, and give your profiles some personality. The last one may only apply to someone in the communications field, but showing you’re a creative and outgoing individual will spark conversation.
Everyone has been preparing for this week in their own individual way, but these are just some of the tips I’ve gotten the last few weeks and the ones I plan on following.
Have a good career week, ComArts! :)
