Hip Dips – A Completely Normal Part of Your Body

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

Hip dips. Violin hips. Trochanteric depressions. Some people have them, some people don’t. Women (in particular) tend to be insecure if they notice them on themselves because of this societal notion that tells women that they should have perfectly round hips in order to be considered attractive. Not to mention a small waist as well in order to fit into what is seen as the “ideal” waist-to-hip ratio.

Because of this, hip dips have begun to become the center of attention in the fitness and diet industry. Articles, social media posts, diets, and more have been produced to discuss them and how to “fix” them. But, before you start immediately believing everything all they have to say, remember to take them with a grain of salt and do your own research.

Hip dips are inward curves, or dips. They are caused by an individual’s bone structure in the pelvic area and therefore are naturally occurring. (Keep this in mind when you read or watch anything that tells you that hip dips are “bad”.) Essentially, hip dips are formed when a person’s hip bone is higher than the femur. This causes fat and muscle to cave in a bit and creates the “dip” that is what the term “hip dips” is referring to. They are absolutely not a reflection on a person’s health or fitness.

This is only a brief introduction to the causes of hip dips as I am not a medical professional. I encourage you to do your own further research on the topic (from credible sources!) and/or speak to a trusted medical professional for more information if you’re interested. But, the bottom line is that hip dips are a normal part of our bodies that have no need to be fixed, nor can it be fixed because it is a part of your bone structure.

So, I hope you are able to keep this in mind the next time you see someone saying that you need to get rid of hip dips. They are just like any other naturally occurring trait variation that occurs in humans. People who have hip dips and people who don’t both have the same ability to be happy and healthy. Be proud of your body and all it does for you!
