3 Ways to Take Time for Yourself During the Holidays

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

Visiting home for the holidays can be both an exciting time to see family and friends, and a very overwhelming time. Even during the holidays, it is still incredibly important to take care of yourself, and prioritize your mental health. Here are just a few ways to take some time for yourself during all of the excitement— and chaos— of the holiday season.

  1.  Do some solo holiday shopping

One way to get some alone time out of the house is to get some holiday shopping done. Even though this doesn’t completely avoid the stress that the holidays can bring on, it can still give you a moment to yourself, and a chance to take a break. If busier stores areas like the mall are still too overwhelming, try exploring some local shops instead, or even just doing some online holiday shopping!

  1. Bring a good book

If you can’t get out of the house to take some time away, packing a book or something else to break away and do for a while can be a lifesaver. Personally, I like to bring a book with me for some alone time, as well as a journal, so I can pick somewhere to write for a little while when I feel like I need a break.

  1. Make the most of your self care routine

The holidays can be a very stressful time, since there can often be a lot of pressure alongside all of the fun and excitement. This means that your typical self care routine is even more important— plus, the break from schoolwork gives you more time for it! I find it helpful to try and continue my self care routines just like I normally would while visiting home for the holidays. This can help give me a sense of normalcy, and it can help to prevent some of the stress and stagnancy I tend to feel during the holidays.

These are just a few ways to  make time for yourself over the holidays. Remember that even though the holidays are exciting and a change of pace, your mental health is still very important, and it is still totally okay to prioritize yourself. Happy Holidays!
