Life can feel difficult and draining sometimes so it is extremely important to make sure you are caring for yourself. It is important to do things that you enjoy so that life feels a bit easier and you can enjoy the little moments. This can sometimes be a hassle when you are away from home at college, but there are still things you can do to feel better. Here are some of my favorite ways to do this.

  1. Watch a comfort movie.

I know I have my own list of movies that make me feel better when I am in a slump, what are some of yours? Just today I was not feeling my best, and I had some downtime, so I put on Hannah Montana: The Movie. It may sound silly but this movie brings me comfort. It is something I would watch a lot when I was little, and I think it brings me back to that place of happiness. It is good to know some of your own comfort movies or TV shows so that you can watch one next time you feel you need a little pick me up.

  1. Take a nice shower.

This will always be one of my favorite ways to take care of myself. It is rejuvenating to just wash away some of my stress. The steam and the smells can help to calm and clean your mind. Also, one of the best feelings in the world can be a shower when you shave your legs. I love the feeling after, when I put on my coziest pair of PJs, or hop under clean sheets. This is a nice, simple way to help lift your spirits and brightens a long day.

  1. Clean my living space.

If you are in a cleaning mood, it could be very beneficial to polish up or organize your room. The state of the room we spend most of our time in is incredibly important to our mental health. If you feel that your room is displaying a negative effect on your mind and you have the energy to fix this, I recommend that you do. Whether it be a quick reorganizing and putting away of clothes, or a deep clean including a vacuum and Swiffer, it can be very beneficial.

  1. Do something creative/artistic.

Another successful way to practice some self-care at college is by doing something creative. This may be something artsy, like painting, or drawing, or it could include writing or photography. Doing something artistic can help to distract or calm our minds, and allow us to just have a little fun. Sometimes when I am feeling stressed, and I have some free time, I enjoy scrapbooking. It allows me to escape the stress of work or school for a little bit, and be my creative self.  So next time you are feeling overstimulated or need a bit of a break, step back and think about which activity from this list you could benefit from. There are so many ways to practice self-care, and it is most successful when you get to know yourself and your own needs.
