All my life I have loved playing sports and working out. I played a sport each season of high school and developed a serious gym regiment when school was on break. Since I have been in college I have loved using Kirby gym, but doing the same rotation of workouts gets boring after a while. This weekend, I was on the phone with my Mom making Thanksgiving plans when she began to rave about her workout class and invited me to come with her. This made me curious about the group fit classes here at Lafayette leading me to my first Body Pump class this Monday.  Body Pump was the closest match to my Mom’s favorite work out. The class focuses on lifting weights in high repetition to tone and strengthen muscles. For more information here is the link to Lafayette’s Group Fit class descriptions: https://recreation.lafayette.edu/fitness-2-2/group-fit-program/group-fitness/classdescriptions/.

When I first arrived you could say I was nervous. I had no clue what equipment I needed and what weights would be best for me. I also quickly realized that I had no clue how to set up my station. However, these nerves quickly faded as the girls who have participated in Body Pump before gave me tips on which weights to choose. I was able to watch how they set up their equipment and they were happy to explain what was needed. The instructor also checked in with me at the beginning and end of the class which gave me reassurance that I was welcome in the class.

The music kept me energized throughout the whole class and the instructor was great at explaining each motion. I feel like the personalization of weights and motion makes this a great class for people of all ability. Most importantly Body Pump gave me a full-body workout. The exercises targeted muscle groups that were not getting attention through my normal gym visits.

Overall I loved the class. It was a positive environment and an effective workout. I will definitely be going to more body pump classes in the future!
