I Went to a Beer and Yoga Class and This is What I Thought

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

So what’s all this buzz about beer and yoga classes? Well, I took my first class a couple weeks ago and loved it.

I’ve been doing yoga for years and it’s a very special practice to me. I was skeptical when I first heard about these yoga classes paired with beer, cider, or wine. I asked myself, wouldn’t that make you sick? Wouldn’t that take away from the yoga zen? Well, it depends how you do it.

A few months ago I went to a yoga class paired with hard cider. Maybe it was the cider I didn’t like, but regardless I wasn’t a fan of pairing the cider with the yoga. We were given the cider before the yoga class and I found my stomach unsettled during the class.

But, this beer and yoga class was different. It took place at a brewery downtown called Three Notch’d Brewing Company. It was only 10 dollars, which is already a good deal for a yoga class. The class began with coffee and a bagel, both from local businesses in the downtown district. I really appreciated all of these local businesses coming together in support of one another. Another thing I appreciated about this class is that the beer was apart of the end of class, almost as a treat for bringing yourself to the matt for some yoga flow.

The yoga class was taught by a local yoga studio instructor. She was awesome and suited the class for all levels of ability. All age groups were present, male and female, beginner and advanced levels of yogis. It was a really cool community event and a perfect way to start my Saturday morning. When the class was over, we were treated to a nice tall pour of local craft beer. The perfect treat to end a good yoga practice.

Ask me if I would do it again? Definitely.

Three Notch’d in downtown Harrisonburg has hosted Winter Bends & Brew Taproom yoga almost every Saturday morning in January with great success. Hopefully people will stay interested and we will see something similar this Spring. But, Three Notch’d isn’t the only place hosting events like this, and Harrisonburg isn’t the only place these bend and brews are occurring. Yoga and drinking events are becoming all of the buzz and chances are you get find an event near you.
