Wellness activities you should try around campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

As a college student, it can be difficult to incorporate time to better my physical and mental well-being in my busy life. I find it helpful to schedule out a specific time to recharge throughout the week. I have trouble staying motivated to engage in wellness activities by myself, so I enjoy participating in group festivities meant to promote students’ physical and spiritual well-being. Here are some activities you should join in to better your health, both mentally and physically:

Koru Mindfulness Classes

In this class, you will learn techniques that will guide you towards becoming more mindful in your everyday life. This class is said to help improve your sleep, focus, academics and reduce stress. This class is offered in-person at 186 McCormick Hall and through Zoom as well. These classes meet weekly for four weeks and are free for students. There are two different classes offered in Koru Mindfulness: Koru Basic and Koru 2.0.

Yoga Classes at the Rec

There are a variety of yoga (and fitness) classes that are offered through the ISU Rec Center, including Restorative Yoga, Yoga Flow, Sunrise Yoga and Yoga Sculpt. These classes focus on your mind and body as one. These group fitness classes provide a safe and calming environment meant to promote mindfulness through guided yoga flows, relaxing music and affirmations. To learn more about each class and how to sign up, visit the Rec Center website.

PAWSitively Stress-Free

If you LOVE puppies and need a fun stress-relief activity, this wellness event is just for you. PAWSitively Stress-Free is located on the third floor of Milner Library and is held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on various days this semester. So if you are studying at the library and need a brain break, head over and pet these certified-therapy dogs!

Wellness coaching

If you want to receive one-on-one guidance on how to improve your current lifestyle, Wellness Coaching may be for you. You will meet with a wellness counselor for free for up to six meetings lasting 30-60 minutes where you will discuss your personal wellness goals and what you have to do to achieve those goals. If you feel you need the extra support and feel you will benefit from an individualized wellness plan, you should try this out!

strength and Cardio classes at the rec

There are many different types of group fitness classes offered at the Rec, including Cycling, Zumba and Total Body Strength classes. These classes are meant to build your strength and endurance through a variety of activities. Whether you are looking to sweat it out or work out your core muscles, you can find that in any of the group fitness classes offered by the Rec.

Illinois State University provides many resources for students to better their overall health. If you were to try out just one of these events listed above, it could spark interest in even more mindfulness and fitness activities.
