Make Your Mornings Better With These 5 Tips

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

Mornings are hard enough as it is. However, as a college student, waking up starts becoming harder and harder. Once you’ve woken up, then the real struggle comes: getting out of bed. Somehow that bed became five thousand times comfier than it was the night before and there is just absolutely no way you’re getting out. Twenty minutes later, you find yourself late for class and in an awful mood.

We’ve all been there, but never fear! Here are some tips on how to make your mornings a more pleasant experience.

Do NOT Look at Your Phone

Trust me, I know it’s tempting to look at everything that happened while you were asleep. However, looking at your phone within ten minutes of waking up can seriously ruin your day. The information overload that hits you right when you wake up will leave you stressed and anxious for the rest of the day. Resist the urge to check your recent emails or Tinder messages (both equally important) and give your mind a chance to fully wake up before bombarding it with information.

Make Your Bed

Although it may feel like a chore, making your bed can severely improve your day. Even if you are running late, take the extra five minutes to do something productive! If the first thing you do when you wake up is making your bed, then you’ve already accomplished something. Yay! You can start your day with a feeling of accomplishment and organization. It may seem tedious, but just try it for a couple of days and you will see a difference!

Drink Water

After sleeping for eight hours (or three), your body is incredibly dehydrated. You need water. Although coffee is definitely a necessity, drink a glass of water first. You will be surprised and how energized and ready for the day you feel. If you want to feel super great, add some lemon to your water to boost your immune system and create natural energy.

Eat a Good Breakfast

Breakfast is probably the most skipped meal of the day, especially with college students. When you’re in a rush to get to class, it becomes an afterthought. However, eating a good breakfast will increase your energy, focus and productivity. If you just can’t seem to fit breakfast in your day, keep some quick healthy options around to grab on your way out the door. Even a simple banana or granola bar can improve your day!

Do Something that Makes You Happy

Whether it’s reading a book, drinking coffee or sitting outside, do something that YOU want to do. Treat yourself for a minute before starting your day. You deserve it! Even if it’s just something quick before heading to class, doing something that makes you happy will increase your mood and general well being. It’s important to treat yourself before the demanding tasks begin!

Follow these five tips and mornings will become the best part of your day. Your morning is essential to how productive and motivated you will be the rest of the day. If you just do these little things each day, the change will be obvious. Do right by yourself and improve your mornings one step at a time!
