How You Can Practice Self Love

A popular term I hear a lot these days is “self-love.” Urban Dictionary, the most reliable source on the internet, defines self love as, “regard for one's own well-being and happiness (chiefly considered as a desirable rather than narcissistic characteristic).” What a beautiful concept. While I really appreciate the idea, and understand it’s vitality, I have no idea how to actively shower myself with love. If you’re like me, don’t worry! I did the research for both of us, and compiled a list that I think might be useful:

1. Find your happy place

You owe it to yourself to find a place that gives you the time to be alone, reflect and de-stress. This place should be your safe haven. Ideally, your happy place would be your room because it’s completely yours, but it can vary to a specific building on campus, a park, etc. For me, my happy place is my room. That’s why I try to not do homework in there and keep a relaxing ambiance.

2. Find ways that make you feel confident

You are amazing, you already should know that. So, try to do more of the things that make you feel more confident. This can vary from dressing up every once in a while, talking about something you are passionate about, or even wearing high heels! Be the girl boss you know you are more often!

3. Make a list about what you love about yourself

Self love is all about acknowledging your strengths. I have found that physically seeing why I love myself makes my day much better. Make a list and put it on your mirror or above your desk! You could even make it a screensaver! Being aware of your amazingness is the first step to self love.

4. Surround yourself with positivity

Seeing positivity around you is inevitably going to affect your mood in a good way. There are a billion self love quotes on Google, so make them your lock screen on your phone or your screensaver on your laptop. Buy canvases or posters with beautiful, empowering quotes on them. Even something simple like starting each day with telling yourself something positive can help!

5. Have designated “me” time

I know being a college student is hard and time is limited. However, taking two hours a week and just designating that time for yourself is not only something you deserve, but something you need. Splurge on some good food, put your hair up and watch a movie -- or whatever makes you happy. Remember that your happiness matters more than your transcript.

6. Get in touch with your inner dialogue

Let’s face it, we all talk to ourselves. It’s a very healthy thing to do. However, if you are not supportive and caring towards yourself, it can spark negativity in your life. For years, I have talked down to myself and indirectly became my worst enemy. That is not the kind of person you need in your life. Start complimenting yourself, celebrating your accomplishments and telling yourself it’s ok to make mistakes. Be your biggest fan, girl!

Researching for this article has helped me understand how important it is value yourself. We all have flaws and insecurities, but that doesn’t mean we are any less than anyone else. I hope you fall in love with yourself soon.
