Feminist Icons and New Year’s Resolutions: Cassey Ho and Blogilates

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Geneseo chapter.

Hello fellow collegiettes! I hope that all of you had great winter break and that you got some much needed rest over the holidays. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that 2018 is here and we all know what that means: New Year’s resolutions. New Year’s resolutions, or even New Semester’s resolutions are a great way to start a journey of self-improvement and self-discovery.

Some of the most popular resolutions I’ve heard include improving grades, getting organized and of course, losing weight. As per my last piece on body positivity, I personally don’t agree with the New Year’s resolution of losing weight. However, I do like the idea of becoming a healthier version of myself and taking better care of my body. My weight may just happen to go down in the process. I’m sure many of you can relate since the college lifestyle of sleep deprivation and unhealthy dining hall food isn’t the healthiest.

As I and many others embark on a journey towards better health, I would like to shine a light on one of my favorite health ambassadors: Cassey Ho, more commonly known as Blogilates. Cassey has appeared on Youtube and many other platforms for years and now reigns over a fitness and fashion empire. Her workout clothes are to die for, just like how some of her workout videos will make you feel as if you are dying. But don’t worry—I’ve done her videos and I’m still here. Cassey is also an upbeat and encouraging ray of sunshine in her videos which helps you feel a little less angry when she’s making you do burpees and crunches. She also has her series called Cheap Clean Eats that helps you cook awesome meals like quesadillas and pizza that are good for both your health and your wallet. My personal favorite is her mac and cheese recipe that makes two servings for only $4.36.

Art is another forte for Cassey, for she designs all sorts of adorable activewear that you can find at her store here. Fashion design was actually how Cassey started out in the fitness industry. She also holds sales frequently, making both your closet and your pocketbook very happy.

Cassey also keeps it real about subjects like body image with videos and articles and website about the challenges of loving yourself no matter your size. Cassey, who is both beautiful and fit, talks about her own struggles with body image and this shows us that no one is immune to body image issues. She also shuts down her body shamers in this video which talks about how society perpetuates many people’s unhealthy body image.

If you don’t already know and love Cassey, New Years is a great time to check out her videos and blogilates.com. For example, to kick off 2018 I am doing her PIIT28 Program for the first 28 days of 2018. PIIT stands for Pilates Intense Interval Training. It combines traditional Pilates with High Intensity Interval Training to tone muscles and burn fat. Cassey sells a PIIT28 Program Book for $39.00, but I am simply doing her free 28 minute PIIT workout five times a week for the month of January.

Please consult your doctor before doing any of Cassey’s videos if you are underweight or have any health concerns. We want you all to be  happy, healthy and safe! At the end of January, I will review how the PIIT28 Program worked for me.
