Happy Birthday! Thousands of strangers are blowing up your phone! This is exactly the present that Instagram user @trollmyfriend gave to his best friend for his 21st birthday. The story began on Feb. 2, 2026, when this creator’s birthday gift was phrased as an Impractical Jokers-type prank. The prank was to blow up his friend’s Instagram account and nonstop ping his phone with birthday messages.
In theory, it’s not a bad prank, and it’s sweet to want your friend to see how thousands of strangers want to wish you a happy birthday. I find the notion endearing, and it highlights that we can, as a society, come together in unity for something greater than one individual. It’s an act of kindness that takes less than a few moments to enact and make another person’s day.
However, there’s a very hard line that needs to be drawn in this situation: the risk to privacy.
Telephone Numbers
Hudson Campbell, the guy in charge of the main account, gave out a phone number. For a while, I thought it was his friend Jace’s personal phone number, but it turns out it was another number that he’d somehow attached to his best friend’s phone.
In my opinion, I still think this is an unwise tactic. Although it may not have been his private number, it was still connected to his primary phone, so his friend was never going to be free or detached from that number. This could present multiple future issues, such as prank calls or telemarketers’ never-ending calls.
It’s important not to share private information online. I know it’s a repeated sentiment, but even for a joke, it can damage not just the person’s privacy, but their family and close friends as well. More people are involved than you think when you share information that lets strangers get involved in your private life.
However, I give kudos to Campbell for setting up this fake number, and it does provide some division between social media and his life. I still think there might be some repercussions, but he did try to create some semblance of separation between Jace and these thousands of strangers online.
Commenter’s Reactions
This wasn’t the only issue to plague Campbell’s prank. Politics came into play when Jace’s account was revealed. There were many reactions to the outcome, and the division between people became evident once again.
When Campbell revealed Jace’s Instagram, people flocked to his profile and clocked that he supported figures such as Donald Trump, Charlie Kirk, and Turning Point USA. I’m not here to comment on anyone’s beliefs; they’re your own. However, when your friend supports extreme right-wing politicians, that can create a division between left-wing believers and right-wing believers. Soon, the comments were no longer supportive of this prank and were instead bashing his friend.
The commentary I have here is the stark controversy that I think defines our lives right now. That is, the comments were so quick to hate, and while I may have different beliefs than Jace, at the end of the day, it’s his beliefs. Someone can believe in something I don’t, and I’m going to turn the other cheek.
I think this immediate bashing and claims to criticize someone are harmful and destructive. This borders on the conversation about cancel culture. While sometimes I think it’s justified for major criminals, to put someone whose views vary from yours on the same list as these people is extreme. At the end of the day, we don’t know his full beliefs; we don’t know who he is as a person, and he could be terrible, but we don’t know.
Drama Shifts To @trollmyfriend
The situation got so far that Campbell was attacked for being friends with someone who supported right-wing politicians and believers. He then pinned a comment that said he didn’t support what his friend did. How much of that can we believe? We don’t know. Yet, it’s crazy that we no longer can accept people being friends with others who don’t share the same opinion.
We’ve become selective about what good certain people deserve, when really, there are always two sides to a coin. Hiding behind a comment and attacking someone you’re never going to sit down with won’t change his mind, and it won’t help you grow.
My main takeaway from this situation is that we should be more careful with the gifts we give. Campbell probably should’ve just taken him out to a venue and thrown a surprise party with his best friends, or people they both could trust. Jace wasn’t perturbed by this whole ordeal; he thought it was cool, but honestly, was this a good birthday surprise or a disaster waiting to happen?
