I know I can’t be the only one who feels this way: somehow, my workouts are 10 times better when I wear my favorite Lululemon leggings and sports bra instead of my old Nike shorts and T-shirt from freshman orientation. The right outfit not only motivates me to get out of bed and hit the gym, but I also feel more confident and ready to take on my workout once I get there when I’m wearing pieces I love.
Well, guess what, collegiettes? It turns out that clothing does, in fact, alter your perception of yourself, and it can even help you power through a difficult workout when you feel good about what you’re wearing. According to a study published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, “clothing influences behavior and attitudes because it carries a symbolic meaning… subconsciously changing how you act.” (Shape) Confidence and a better workout? I don’t think we need any more reason to shop for some new clothes and accessories.
I’ve compiled a few of my favorite pieces for the college woman on a budget, all $25 or less. Enjoy the new clothes and better workouts!
