Is a Personal Trainer better than a Gym Membership?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIU chapter.

Most of us who work out regularly have been bombarded with the in-person ads of personal trainers at our local gyms after purchasing a membership.  While most of us get a membership to work out alone, there are many people who get to the gym and are genuinely unsure of what will work best for them, or what workouts will help get them to their fitness goal. Some people do get relatively pricey memberships, and so adding a personal trainer to that cost may be in the cards for them. For some, even the minimal membership may be just enough and that extra cost may seem a bit out of their range.

A gym membership can have different components, depending on the gym you go to, and the membership you decided to purchase. Most commonly, you will get access to the gym and most of the ammenities, granted you might not get into all of the classes offered or use of the sauna, among a few others. Some memberships allow you to bring others along to your workouts, without having to sign them into anything or harrassing them with questions of getting a membership for themselves.  You have access to all the workout machines and you have control over what you want to do for the time you spend at the gym. You can also control the time of your workout in general. You are the master of your own workout!

With all that said and done, a lot of people are actually unsure of what to do when they’re at the gym. There are a few gyms that offer some assistance in telling you what equipment does what for your body, but no one really to tell you if you’re squatting properly, or if you’re using the machine the way it’s intended to. For some, a Personal Trainer may be the better option.  They’re there to guide your work out and help you make the most of what you’re doing! They come with the advantage of teaching you the right way of using equiptment, or helping you do certain workouts the correct way so you don’t injure yourself in the process.

Have you ever found yourself not knowing what to eat after a workout or during the day in general? Another perk of a PT is the meal plan most of them will give you once you’ve decided to join! You’ll learn about what foods work best for your body, and yours alone, as most of them are personalized to you and your body type. A PT will also give you the motivation to continue going to the gym, they will text you and ask where you’ve been if you’ve missed workouts. They will push you to do the best you can, to see the results you wanted to see fromt the beginning.

All in all, working out is something that is very personal and different methods work for different people. There is no wrong or right way to workout, as long as you’ve found what works best for you!
