Working Out: In and Around Davidson

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Davidson chapter.

For those of you who haven’t realized yet, Davidson is a pretty athletic school. We are one of the smallest Division 1 schools, approximately one-third of students are athletes, and, of course, Steph Curry went here. There are 10 men’s varsity sports and 9 women’s varsity sports. Outside of NCAA sports, we have 15 club sports open to all students and a variety of intramurals. And also, we can’t forget about freshmen flickerball!

For varsity level athletes, the strength and condition center (officially named The Doe Weight Room), the Belk Arena, and all of the athletic fields and facilities, like Alumni Soccer Field, are open for use. For us non-varsity athletes, it’s a little harder to find the space to work out and get fit. On campus, there are 3 gyms open to non-athletes: Chidsey (or New Dorm) gym, Union gym, and Baker gym. They all are pretty similar–filled with various machines, some open spaces to move around, and free weights (mostly dumbbells) and other small pieces of equipment.

Within Baker, there are other athletics facilities including the Charles A. Cannon Pool, the indoor tennis courts, and racquetball courts. These facilities are open when they are not in use by varsity teams or during hours that are posted at the facility. Davidson is also a 650-acre campus, so there is plenty of room to run, especially on the cross-country trails that are behind IMACS field. But, if you ever get bored with the on-campus options, there are many places to go that are off campus. I, for one, go to CrossFit Eternal Davidson 4 days a week. This CrossFit box offers a variety of CrossFit classes and Olympic Lifting classes.

There is also Yoga on Davidson–a yoga studio next to Whit’s ice cream that offers many different types of yoga classes for all levels of yogis. I highly recommend the Vinyasa classes if you’re not a yoga expert.

There are also places a little bit further from campus, including Sweat Cycle in Charlotte, Polefit Carolinas Premiere Pole Dancing Studio in Huntersville, and OrangeTheory in Cornelius.

So, whatever sort of physical activity you choose–on or off campus–there are plenty of options to get fit and work off those late night quesadillas.
