Life is Less of What You Do and More How You Live it

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cincinnati chapter.

“Most men are about as happy as they think of themselves to be.”

-Abraham Lincoln

Life is a mangled yarn of happiness and sorrow, life is a hurdle race, never meant to be smooth, life is like the sun and the moon because no matter what happens, it does not stop rising and setting at its own time.

Life will punch you hard in the face, only waiting for you to get back up so that it can kick you in the stomach, but getting the wind knocked out of you is the only way to remind your lungs how much they love the taste of air. Destiny unfolds as it should, life moves as it should, but the only thing that matters is whether you choose to hold its hand tight and move along or fall down in the journey, waiting to be picked up.

In one and the same fire, wax melts and gold refines. This fire, for us, is life. Life always gives us an option; we always can control our stars and shape our lives. There never is a compulsion. If you choose to be happy, no power in the world can take that happiness away. If you choose to be melancholic or cynical, no power, in the same world, can make you happy.

Problems, tragedies, and challenges are an inevitable part of everyone’s lives; they spare nobody. But whatever happens matters much less than how you react to it. For instance, there is a huge problem standing right in front of you with its chest grown wide in arrogance. Now you have two choices. First, to let that challenge overpower you and take away your peace of mind. Second, to face it like a warrior till it eventually shatters before you.

As for all the bad things happening in life, from your losing your pen to losing parts of yourself, just remember that it all happens for a reason. It is only meant to test you and you cannot fail. Optimism is the faith that keeps us going; pessimism is the blockage that makes us stiff in this flowing life. Turn back to the sad pages of your life, to those untold stories, and you will realize that those were the times when you gave up. Life is harsh, but you cannot let the harshness to take away your softness, the bitterness to take away your sweetness.

No matter how hard life gets, a reason to smile can always be found.

The people who don’t seek the sunshine, are never really satisfied or complete in life. We are only a conversation between life and death surrounded by sleep on both ends. Life is too short to be spent in slumber or melancholy or hatred. Get up, act, move, spread love, share happiness, and you will find that life has never been better.

I am a harmony of sweet rebellions. I am a fighter, waiting to fight all the pain in the world with chocolates and an ear-to-ear smile. I am what I let myself to be and I live a life which I choose to live. Optimism is the only faith I have and come what may, I still believe this life to be a beautiful and happy place. Therefore, I vehemently believe that life is less of what happens and more of how you react to it.
