I wasn’t sure where I’d find myself when I first got to the University of Cincinnati as a freshman. I felt so overwhelmed with all the possibilities: a million clubs to choose from, Greek Life, academics, searching for internships, going out. It felt like there was just so much, and I wasn’t sure where I would fit in.
I stumbled upon the Her Campus booth at the Fall Organization Fair, where every club at UC sets up tables at Nippert Stadium to talk about their club. Originally, I was actually a little hesitant to join because I wasn’t interested in writing. I thought why should I join a club that seems to be about writing?
That’s where I was totally wrong.
Since joining Her Campus, I’ve found so many lifelong friendships, participated in exciting campus events, and learned skills that I can apply to my industry when I graduate.
We’re More Than a Digital Magazine
Don’t get me wrong: I love our digital magazine. I am always looking forward to the next article, and I love seeing our social media promoting our phenomenal writers. However, I’m a graphic design major, so I thought that I wouldn’t have a place at Her Campus.
When I first joined the club, I wasn’t sure that I wanted to write any articles at all, so I was able to talk to the president at the time, and she brought me onto the marketing team. Through that, I was actually able to pitch a redesign for our entire brand. Over the next couple of months, I created templates for our social media accounts, presentations, and flyers.
We have so many members that enjoy writing and publishing articles, of course, but we also have members that are more interested in events or social media. Whether you’re majoring in communications, marketing, design, journalism, photography, or any other major, there is a place for you in Her Campus.
Professional Experience & Real Friendship
Regardless of your major, there are opportunities for real professional development within Her Campus at UC. As a design major, I was able to lead a brand redesign that I added to my portfolio! I’ve spoken about this process in interviews, and it’s helped me land multiple internships.
For marketing majors, we partner with globally known brands each year on gifting campaigns and product samples. As a part of these campaigns, we plan tabling events around campus and create content for the products we receive. I’ve loved this aspect of HC to combine my love for beauty with a passion in content creation.
And last but not least, writers and journalists have the ability to be published on a national website. We’ve had writers publish about all sorts of topics: from the latest in pop culture to new music and beauty or a researched piece on current events. You don’t even have to be a journalism major to write for us! Personally, I’ve written countless articles just for fun.
