Cougars, pat yourselves on the back for getting through midterms. On top of regular coursework, the past two weeks were filled with exams, group presentations, and essays. Now that those are over, we can spend more time focusing on getting in the right headspace for the upcoming months.

We have about two weeks before Fall Break, meaning we have two weeks to destress. These next two weeks will be busy but will not compare to the past two. In order to set ourselves up for success, we should prioritize our mental health. Here are some ways to take care of ourselves

1. Set a new sleep schedule.

If you are like me, your midterm sleep schedule consisted of a late bedtime and an early wakeup call. Setting new alarms to allow yourself to wind down earlier and get at least eight hours will greatly improve production throughout the day.

2. If you do not already use your planner, start now.

Professors have begun to introduce final projects and discuss final exams. Without some type of system to keep ourselves organized; assignments will creep up. Personally, I have multiple avenues to keep myself organized. I keep a planner in my bookbag, sticky notes on my desktop, to-do lists on the notes app, and random lists of priorities that sit on my desk. I cannot stress enough the importance of planning out your day.

3. Go for a walk.

I am fortunate to have my car with me this week and am taking full advantage of it. I have incorporated afternoon beach walks into my routine. There is nothing better than feeling the sun and wind while looking at the ocean. If getting to the beach is not an option for you, a walk around the city will produce the same results. A chance to clear your mind after classes should be on everyone’s to-do list.

I am a sophomore at the College of Charleston planning on majoring in Communication and minoring in Spanish. In my free time, I enjoy reading and going on long walks.
