Between classes, work, social plans, and trying to have a life outside of school, stress can build up quickly. Luckily, you don’t always need hours to feel better. One of the easiest ways to calm yourself down is through breathing exercises. Try inhaling slowly through your nose for four seconds, holding for four seconds, and then exhaling for four seconds. This is called Box Breathing. Repeat this a few times while focusing only on your breathing. Even taking a couple of minutes to pause can help you feel more grounded when everything feels overwhelming.
Another simple way to reduce stress is by creating a short routine before bed. You don’t need an elaborate nighttime routine with 15 different skincare products. Instead, try putting your phone away for the last 15–30 minutes before you sleep, dimming the lights, stretching, journaling, or listening to calming music. Doing the same few relaxing activities each night can give your brain a signal that it’s time to slow down. Even if you only have ten minutes, making that time for yourself can make your night feel a little less chaotic and help you calm down after a long day.
Finally, if you have a few extra minutes, try putting your legs up against a wall. Lie on your back and extend your legs straight up the wall while keeping your arms relaxed at your sides. Stay there for a few minutes while taking slow breaths. It’s an easy way to pause, stretch, and step away from whatever is stressing you out. The best part? You can do it right in your dorm room. Sometimes stress relief doesn’t have to be complicated—taking a few intentional minutes for yourself can make a bigger difference than you think.
