Re-Taking a Class? We’ve All Been There

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bryant chapter.

Ah, the end of the semester.

This means if our grades aren’t where they need to be, we have to do everything in our power to get them there – and QUICK.

But, if every effort ends in failure, we are left with only one option: re-taking that one dreaded class we hoped we would never find ourselves in again.

If you’re in this spot or have ever been, we feel your pain.

Even if this is you, though, there is no need to feel any shame. Some classes are extremely difficult to some while it may be a piece of cake to others. People have the subjects they like, and the ones they completely despise – this is the natural balance of academia. So, if you find yourself in the position where you’re forced to re-take a class, have no fear. We have been there and are here to help you through it!

Whether you’re taking the course at your full-time college or university, or are taking it again elsewhere, use this experience as a second chance. You’re starting with a completely clean slate. Honestly, if you think about it, you may have a one-up on everyone else in the class (depending on your specific situation).

Look at it this way: If you have already taken the professor, you know their style, what their expectations are, have already formed a relationship, and know exactly what to expect.

If you are taking it with a new professor, you have complete free range of how you approach the course. They probably aren’t aware that this is your second (maybe third) time taking this course. So, approach the material this time with new eyes. You’re being given another chance to fix your mistakes, to take the time to comprehend the material, and PASS. THIS. CLASS!

Another piece of advice we can give is to try and make a buddy in the course.

This can help you dramatically. A bonus is if they are also re-taking the class, but if this is not the case, making a friend can give you a support system, a study buddy and maybe a personal tutor if they understand the material better than you do. And, hey, who doesn’t love new friends?

Regardless of your situation and how miserable the class might be, we all have to power through those classes we just cannot seem to grasp.

Take this second chance and use it as motivation to do better – because then, you won’t have to do it again!

You got this!
