Easy Things to Get You Started at the Gym

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bryant chapter.

The gym…some people love it, some people hate it, some people just don’t know what to do there. We are lucky to have a free gym at school so if you get into the habit of going to the gym now, it will be worth paying for a gym when you graduate! If you don’t know what to do, here are some ideas to get you started.

1. Walking on an incline

You don’t have to run on the treadmill, you can walk and still burn calories. You can either gradually increase your incline at a fixed speed or you can use one of the courses on the treadmill. In the Bryant gym, a great course is “walking through the Grand Canyon.” The incline fluctuates, giving you a great workout and there are fun facts to keep you distracted.

2. The elliptical

The elliptical is great for a cardio workout! It will get your blood pumping and you will break a sweat. Start as slow as you want and on whatever level you are comfortable with and gradually make your workout more challenging.

3. The stairmaster

This is great to tone your legs! You don’t have to stay on here for long to start to feel the burn!

4. Free weights

Use the free weights to tone your arms! Start with the 10 pound weights and when you’re ready, use heavier weights. Check out Pinterest or YouTube videos to learn how to properly use weights so you don’t hurt yourself!

5. Stretch

Stretching is so important so your muscles aren’t too sore! While you are on the mat, you can do some pushups, crunches, and a plank to add to your workout!

Going to the gym does not have to be like pulling teeth. Once you know what you like to do, it will seem like less of a chore and more of a habit. So what are you waiting for?! Grab a friend, make a workout playlist, and head to the gym!
