You. A word that’s definition is unchangeable and unambiguous.Lots of people find themselves looking to the external world to really understand themselves, who they are and what they like or dislike. However, what happens if we really lean into our internal world in order to discover ourselves better?

We are living in a hugely filtered and regulated society nowadays. Cancel culture is rife among other interesting changes. Although this can bring huge benefits to individuals, for example providing protection to vulnerable people who may be discriminated against, it also means that there is often portrayed a ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to live one’s life.

The word authentically is defined as ‘living your life according to your own needs and values rather than those of society, friends and family’. In the Study of Authenticity by Elizabeth Hopper, researchers found that people who adopted this approach to life reported to have greater happiness, more positive emotions and higher self-esteem. Let’s be honest, it is exhausting faking things so why do we? Growing up, similar values and views are often passed down from parents and significant people within our lives. These can be hard to depart from as we develop within our lives but once they are, and we independently understand the world around us, we can see the world in a different way that is unique to us.

I believe I have finally cracked it. No more saying yes to things I know deep down won’t satisfy me and will lead me to spend time regretting why I didn’t just ‘stick to my metaphorical guns’ and explain how it wasn’t for me. I am an inherent people pleaser who is afraid that if I walk past a dog and don’t acknowledge it that it will hate me. Since moving to Uni, I have discovered how important it is to be yourself as it makes you interesting and stand out from others. Now I live my life based on my own desires and passions. Below, I will share some tips that will allow you to to join me living the authentic life and ultimately living our #best lives!

  •  Take note of how you feel after activities. Was there any true enjoyment or are you attempting to make yourself feel like this? Trust your gut!
  •  Learn to ignore comments from others. This is truly easier said done but just remember that they are just uncomfortable with your comfort.
  •  Big yourself! Not in a big headed way but remember your awesome parts and let them shine through.

Always try and be as authentic as possible whenever you can be, your confidence and self-worth will drastically grow!

I am super interested in the world we live in and really champion people standing up what they believe in! I enjoy all sports and run every day outside of working on the weekends and doing a law degree :)
