A Taste of Tasty: Fried Chicken & Egg Rice

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bentley chapter.

I am by no means what anyone would consider a good cook. That being said, as a senior in college, I realize that it’s about time for me to start learning. Together, my boyfriend and I decided that we would try to make one Tasty recipe every other week. We love that Tasty provides its readers not only with step-by-step instructions, but also an informative video (which can be very helpful for those who don’t have much experience in the kitchen). Over the course of this semester, I’m going to be giving you the scoop on all the setbacks and triumphs that we encounter with these Tasty recipes!

For the first week, we decided to make the Fried Chicken and Egg Rice Bowl.

Ingredients

One of the toughest things about making this recipe was obtaining all of the ingredients. Personally, I didn’t have soy sauce, mirin, or sake sitting around in my kitchen. While I did end up buying the soy sauce and mirin, I decided to forgo the use of sake for convenience’s sake. Similarly, neither of us thought it was necessary to buy the scallions or shredded nori, which were both just used as garnishes. The only other change that we made was to grill the chicken rather than fry it in panko breadcrumbs (an admittedly small attempt to make this recipe healthier).

The Cooking Process

The cooking process for this recipe was actually quite easy. After finishing the chicken and rice, we started to make the sauce (this contained onions, soy sauce, sake, mirin, and chicken stock). The toughest part came after the sauce was done. The recipe required us to place the chicken on top of the sauce and crack 2 beaten eggs around the chicken. The idea is that the hot, bubbling sauce will then cook the egg from underneath. We made the mistake of using a pan that was much too large for this recipe, and thus we had to hold it tilted at an angle to make sure that the sauce and egg pooled around the chicken and could cook. The moral of the story? Check the size of your pan!

We ended up adding an extra egg to the pan because we felt that 2 were not enough. After everything cooked through, we simply slid everything right out of the pan and placed it on top of the rice (which we had previously spread out on a dinner plate). Due to some technical difficulties, our plating didn’t look quite as unblemished as Tasty’s.

The Result

In the end, we LOVED this recipe. It was savory yet sweet, and it was certainly very filling. If you’re a fan of chicken and rice, I’d highly recommend trying it. You can find the full recipe here.

Stay tuned for our next Tasty adventure!
