Things to Help You When You Are Stressed and Anxious

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Belmont chapter.

It’s getting to be that time again. Almost halfway through the semester and the work seems to be piling up. Homework, school, work, relationships, friends, and any and all other activities in your life are beginning to seem like too much to handle. We all feel like this from time to time, but don’t worry! You can get through this even if it seems impossible right now. Here are some things that help me when I am feeling stressed and anxious, and I hope they can help you too!

1. Make a to-do list

When tasks are written down on paper instead of swirling around your head, it makes things feel a lot more manageable. Sometimes it even helps to prioritize these lists into things that need to be urgently done, and other things that can wait. (I’ll be writing another article on how to the perfect to-do list soon). Once you prioritize your items, do the most important things first and the more mundane tasks just when you have time.

2. Do Some Yoga

Doing Yoga is a great activity to keep you grounded. Being stressed causes unwanted tension to build up in your body, and yoga is a great way to release this tension so you can feel more relaxed.

3. Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Sleep is very important, and when we don’t get enough sleep, our bodies are tired and our mind can seem fuzzy. There is only so much caffeine can do to make up for lost hours of rest! Go to bed a little earlier to help your mind stay sharp and active so you can focus better during whatever that day needs you do to. There are not many things a good night’s sleep can’t fix! If you are exhausted there is no way you can be giving your 100%. Just get some rest so you can do your best!

4. Journal

Not unlike a to-do list, journaling helps every thought swirling around in your head to find a permanent home on paper. If something is worrying you, write it down. It might not seem as big of a problem once you put pen to paper and turn it into something that you can see.

5. Drink A Cup Of Hot Tea

Tea is very soothing, whether you are sick or whether you just had a long day. A nice hot cup of Chamomile can help a great deal. Just take the time for yourself to be present in the moment and enjoy your nice, hot, relaxing cup of tea.

6. Call your mom!

Pep talks from your mother can always help, too. She does know you best (usually), and believes in you unconditionally (yay)!

7. Cut Back!

If you still feel overwhelmed, you might be spreading yourself too thin. It may be time to step back, look at the bigger picture, and see if there are any obligations that can be cut out of your life. This is a really hard one, but it can be for the better I promise. When I was feeling overwhelmed, I took a good look at everything that was needing my attention in life, and identified what was stressing me out the most. I found that vlogging (something that really helped me find myself over this past summer) was causing me more stress than it was bringing a positive impact on my life. So, I decided to cut it out. It wasn’t the easiest decision, but I feel good about it because I have more time to put towards other aspects in my life. You can do similar things within your own life. If something small is causing you stress, cut it out of your life!
