Masters life

“Get ready for the most intense year of your life” I was told five seconds after I excitedly announced I’ve been accepted onto a masters course at the University of Aberdeen. I didn’t believe them, I thought to myself it’s just one year, how hard can it be?

Here are four things I was not prepared for:

No free time

I’m sorry does that say classes from 9am till 6pm every day on my timetable?? Oh and I’m expected to go home and do even more work and reading?! I THINK NOT.

No exams!

No exams is a bonus, however this means assignments are due left, right and centre. Five assignments in one day?! Are you for real?? Deadlines are also always due at 5pm, whilst you’re in class. This adds to the stress of getting things done for the day before.

Having a job is almost impossible

‘I’ll need to get a part time job on the weekends so I have pennies for food and a social life!’ Think again. Weekends are now the only time you have to complete all assignments. You had plans to go to Revs de Cuba with your pals? Too bad.

Expectations

The jump from undergrad to masters expectations is HUGE.  And you’re not exactly eased into it either.

Aside from the year being incredibly stressful, the field trips, friendships and opportunities that come out of a masters course are all totally worth it!  For those of you considering a masters course I only have one thing to say, get ready for the most intense year of your life!
