Tips and Tricks to De-Stress as a Freshman

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Simmons chapter.

It’s only October, but us freshman are already stressed, whether it’s exams, endless hours of reading, or trying to balance everything on your plate. Here are some tips and tricks on how you can detox stress!

1. Listen to your favorite music

Whether it be Hip-hop, classical, jazz, rap, or pop, listening to your favorite song or playlist will calm your nerves. Closing your eyes and tuning out stress will allow you to let go of any negative thoughts and clear your mind.

2. Work out

While some enjoy a lazy day of relaxation, working out can reduce stress. Stretch out the tense and tight muscles, until you feel limp, let yourself let out the anxiety. Thinking about nothing but the exercise.

3. Explore

Simmons is located in the middle of dozens of stores and places to visit. Explore the cafes, the retails stores or even Fenway Park. Find your zen spot in Boston, where you can relax and let go of any burdens.

4. Journal

Grab a pen and some paper, journaling allows you to go crazy with all the ideas and thoughts crammed in your brain. Write a short story, diary entry, or even your thoughts and feelings.

5. Plan

Planners can help organize your schedule, instead of wondering where, when, and who. Planners don’t work? Don’t like how they are set up? Try Bullet Journaling, it allows you to customize your own daily schedule, to any format that will keep you up to date.

6. Inspirational Quotes

Find your quote of the day, something that gets you going and inspires you to work harder. Distressing quotes allow you to stop thinking negatively and clear your cluttered mind. Tell yourself that you “can do” instead of “cannot do”.

7. Eat your favorite food

What better way to de-stress than to eat your favorite food! Visit a local food place, or even surprise yourself with something new. Let your mind remember; what really matters, the stress in life right now is towards a greater goal.

8. Meditation or Sleep

Everyone loves to sleep. Utter relaxation, not a thought in your mind, complete serenity. Sleep lets us recharge and rejuvenate our mind, forget about the useless stress and headaches that bother us constantly. Meditating allows you to calm down and consider the importance of the little things that we all stress about. Next time when you are at a loss, sit down and take a few deep breaths and guide yourself to peace.

9. Laugh, Cry, Vent

Emotions let us express ourselves in a time of complete disorder. Find a trustful friend or your favorite zen spot and let the emotions out, whether it be joy, sadness, or anger. Venting allows you to get another ear; insight on your stress, talk it out until you don’t feel like anything is pushing down on you anymore.

10. Reward yourself!

We all love a little gift for ourselves. Once you have made it over the mountains of stress, get yourself something you had been craving or wanting. Place incentives to push yourself to complete your goals.
