The beginning of college means getting used to a brand new routine, and for many, finding new ways to stay active is part of that adjustment. The University of Maryland offers a wide variety of free workout classes through RecWell, but with so many options, it can be difficult to know which one to actually sign up for. From high-effort classes with loud music and lots of energy to less intense classes with smaller, softer movements, each class offers a completely different experience.

For students who want to try a new workout but aren’t sure where to start, three classes might stand out: Rhythm Ride, Barre and Yoga Flow.

Rhythm Ride is a cycling class that combines a traditional spin workout with loud music. The class is a high-energy and fun way to get cardio into your routine. The motivating atmosphere carries you through the workout, making it feel more like a fun group activity than simply exercising. For students who enjoy upbeat music and a workout that keeps them moving, Rhythm Ride is a great class to try.

Although Barre is a completely different experience, it is a good option for students who want something other than cardio or enjoy workouts that involve controlled movements. The class focuses on strength and balance. Barre is more focused on technique and individual movements, with segments that revolve around legs, arms and core.

“Any student at any level can come to this class,” said senior Barre instructor Katherine Miller. “We do a lot of modifications in the class, so we start with simple movements, and then add challenges if the student would like.”

Yoga Restore is the most calming option of the three. Rather than focusing on cardio or strength, the class is centered around flowing through different yoga poses while focusing on movement and breathing. The slower pace is an excellent way to feel relaxed and decompress while getting your body moving.

The best part of the workout classes offered here at the University of Maryland is the variety. Students do not have to stick to one type of exercise and can try as many classes as they want to figure out what they enjoy. Whether it is cycling, barre, yoga or something completely new, a workout class is an excellent way to get into a healthy routine and meet other students along the way!
