PLAYLISTS. The first step to going to the gym solo is having something to distract you. One of the best ways to do this is by making a playlist full of songs that make you want to keep pushing through all the difficult parts of a workout. Whether you like hip hop, pop, country, or a mix of everything, having a playlist full of songs that give you inspiration is the key to getting through a workout.

PARTNER IN CRIME. Going alone sounds like a nightmare? Grab your bestie, sibling, or significant other and go to the gym as a pair. Not only is this helpful for easing the stress of working out in front of a bunch of random people, but it can also help you to learn new workouts. It helps to have someone there to motivate you. Working out can even be a really good bonding experience. If you’re trying to build a relationship with someone, working out can be a really good way to start.

PREP. Something that is always beneficial for any stressful situation is being prepared. For the gym this could mean planning your workouts ahead of time so you don’t feel like a lost puppy looking around at the bars and machines when you arrive. No clue what workouts to do at the gym? No need to worry. There are numerous applications out there that you can download to your device that give you ideas for exercises or even guide you through your own workout. Some applications have a small fee, but if you search through them, you’ll be guaranteed to find a free option. Another source of inspiration is different social media sites. People love to post their workouts on Pinterest, YouTube, Tik Tok, and Instagram, and if you begin hunting, you will without a doubt find some new influencers to motivate you to hit the gym.

WARDROBE. One of the best ways to boost your confidence at the gym is by feeling good about what you’re wearing. Athletic clothes tend to be quite expensive, but they don’t always have to be. Stores like TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Ross have a plethora of athletic clothes for fairly cheap prices. Amazon is also another option that sells high-quality athletic clothes for a fraction of the price. Want name-brand but aren’t willing to spend that much money? Consider thrifting your athletic clothes. Stores like Goodwill and Plato’s Closet, and online platforms such as Poshmark and Depop are your best options for buying quality, lightly-used athletic clothes at a discounted price.

Hopefully, some of these tips and tricks make it a little easier to go to the gym. Still, feeling anxious? There are plenty of other options for getting exercise. With the rise of the pandemic, many fitness influencers have taken to social media to post workouts that can be done in the comfort of your own home. With summer right around the corner, it’s also never a bad option to head outside and walk in the fresh air. No matter what you choose, be sure you’re taking care of yourself both mentally and physically. You got this.
