Coastal Grandma

Meg Hasch Student Contributor, University of Cincinnati
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cincinnati chapter and does not reflect the views of Her Campus.

In New England, coasts remain slightly chilly all year long, especially in the mornings, and the breezy, linen clothes that come with the coastal look allow for the breeze to work with the garments instead of against them.

The term coastal grandma was first introduced in Nancy Meyers movies to describe a relaxed, upscale look consisting of linen shirts, cream sweaters, white trousers, and chic slides.

Coastal grandma started trending a year or two ago, and I am here for it. With the simplicity of the look and the maturity that comes along with it, utilizing this trend can create an air of maturity around anyone who is looking to up their look.

Coastal Grandma Must-Haves

  1. Classic Linen Button Down

A classic linen button-down can go with anything, including linen pants, denim, corduroy, and more. It serves best on a slightly chilly day with a breeze.

  1. Classic Linen Pants/Skirt

Either of these can be paired with just about any top: tank top, cami, short-sleeve, off-the-shoulder, long sleeve, button-down, etc., for summer and spring weather, never a winter piece unless in Florida.

  1. Wedge Sandals

A wedge sandal pairs well with any of these recently mentioned garments and falls in the easy-to-walk-in heel category. It can work well for a casual or fancy dinner.

  1. Boatneck Dress

A grandma’s favorite is the boatneck dress that flares out at the hips, and represents a classical look that anyone can adore. It can be worn to religious services with a sweater, both nice and casual dinners, and in professional settings.

  1. Gold/Pearl Jewelry

The best jewelry that pairs with any of these looks is any pearl or gold, the simpler the better in this case, to not draw too much attention to one’s chest. Statement jewelry is never the way to go in this case.

As summer 2026 begins, the coastal grandma trend is one that I see making an even bigger splash than in the past. Personally, I am here for it.
