As young black women in college, we face a variety of issues that can alter our ways of viewing the world and even ourselves. The things that we see and hear (both positively and negatively) on television, social media, and physically from other people can tend to infiltrate our minds and start to take a toll on us mentally and physically. Depending on how bad what you see/hear affects you, you can become more self-conscious and self-doubtful to the point where you can feel the effects personally and acquire pessimistic thoughts that could lead to more serious mental conditions such as anxiety and depression. Michael Kerr from Healthline.com states that “1 out of 4 college students suffer from some form of mental illness, including depression.” In order to help preserve your mental health from deteriorating, the process to healing are seeking professional help and self-healing techniques are available. Individuals have multiple techniques for self-healing and one of them might include using positive affirmations. You may have heard the saying, “Words are powerful.” Well, it’s true! Positive affirmations are extremely simple, positive quotes or phrases that describe how you want to feel or what you want to do. With these quotes and phrases, you essentially say and repeat every word to yourself until you believe them and they eventually manifest into your life.
