The Paper Mill Playhouse: New Jersey's Premiere Theatre5/21/2013 |
Broadway quality without the Broadway ticket price. Sounds too good to be true? Well, it’s not. New Jersey’s premiere Paper Mill Playhouse just finished its run of the dazzling musical Thoroughly Modern Millie. Featuring seasoned Broadway vets Laurie Veldheer (Newsies), Brenda Braxton (Chicago, Smokey Joe’s Café, Cats, Dreamgirls), Jeff Kready (Billy Elliot, Sunday in the Park…, Les Misérables), and Burke Moses (Guys and Dolls, Beauty and the Beast, Kiss Me, Kate); Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the story of a young Kansas farm-girl, Millie Dillmount, who arrives in flapper-filled New York City in 1922 with the dream of marrying rich – at any cost. The sparkling show’s incredible set design and gorgeous period costumes enhance the visual spectacle and highest quality production. The theatre is accessible from New York City and walking distance from the Millburn stop on NJ Transit. The Paper Mill features many shows out-of-town Broadway previews and several galas by some of the Great White Way’s biggest names. |
Oz Prequel Follows The Yellow Brick Road To Theatres3/8/2013 |
Long before Dorothy dropped in to Oz, there was an earlier visitor from Kansas. Disney’s The Wizard of Oz prequel, Oz: The Great and Powerful, out in theatres today, tells the story of Oscar Diggs (James Franco), who goes by the moniker “Oz”, a Kansas native small-time magician in a travelling circus who spends more of his time charming the local ladies than performing actual tricks. After the townsfolk learn that he is a fraud, cue Oscar’s great escape via a hot air balloon which is sucked into a twister. After landing in Oz, Oscar meets the naïve and seemingly innocent young witch Theodora (Mila Kunis) who believes that he is the great and powerful Wizard that Oz’s former King had predicted would arrive to save the land from the wrath of the Wicked Witch. Theodora’s sister, Evanora (Rachel Weisz) is doubtful that there will be a savior for the enchanted land, and grows even more dubious after the arrival of the “wizard.” The third witch, Glinda, was the former Princess of Oz, until Evanora overthrew her after discovering that Glinda poisoned her father in an attempt to take over the throne. Oz is sent on a journey to liberate the citizens of Oz; becoming their Wizard and the “Great” man he has always dreamt of being. The film begins in a black-and-white toned Kansas, paying homage to the 1939 The Wizard of Oz, but upon Oscar’s arrival in Oz, the world is technicolor à la Dorothy’s landing in Munchkinland. |

Do Something: Give A Spit About Cancer10/7/2012 |
Do you want to change the world? Do you want to help rid the world of cancer? Then Do Something! DoSomething.org's Give A Spit About Cancer campaign is back this year and it is bigger and better than ever. In partnership with Be the Match, Do Something is searching for college students to run bone marrow donor registration drives on campus. The program aims to launch drives on over 200 college campuses and sign up 15,000 new donors. There’s a real need for registered bone marrow donors in the US. And you can help. Leukemia kills more children every year than any other disease and only 30% of patients in need of a bone marrow can find a match within their family. The other 70% rely on complete strangers, and 60% of patients never receive the donations they need. Donors age 18-24 are in the highest demand and donations are most successful when the donor falls within this age range. All it takes to sign up for the bone marrow donor registry, and potentially save a life, is a cheek swab. And best of all, Give A Spit About Cancer is simple, free, and potentially life-saving. So how can you get involved? College students across the nation will lead local donor registration drives on their school campuses. DoSomething.org and Be the Match will help you organize the drives by shipping free of charge swab kits containing all of the materials needed to register 200+ new donors. And drive participants will even receive prizes. So what are you waiting for? The campaign is already in effect and the results will be announced in December. |

Katie Shea & Susie Levitt: The Collegiettes Behind CitySlips9/21/2012 |
Four years ago, Katie Shea and Susie Levitt were just NYU collegiettes with a dream. Since then they have launched CitySlips - functional, foldable, and oh-so-adorable ballet flats. The girls chatted with Her Campus NYU about their inspiration, how they started their business, and their advice to future entrepreneurs. HC NYU: What first inspired you to design CitySlips? K: We’re short! We’re 5’2”. Especially being a student in New York, you’re not just a college student, you’re interning, you have social events, you have classes, and you are kind of juggling so many things. And because we are petite, we definitely wore heels pretty often. It definitely gives you confidence - it makes you feel taller and a little more put together - and one of the things we were both dealing with at the end of the night was our feet killing us with the pain. In the summer of 2008 before our senior year at NYU, we both had internships, so we would meet up every week and discuss our passion for entrepreneurship. [CitySlips] was something that wasn’t yet on the market, and we thought it was something that made sense. We both gravitated towards products, and this was something that we could actually do. S: I’m from Connecticut originally, and Katie and I are both short, but I always wear my high heels, and people didn’t know how tall I actually was, they thought I was a lot taller, like 5’5”, and in actuality, I’m probably 5’2” on a good day. Going to school in New York and walking from Union Square to Cooper Square and you realize that high heels, while they look great and are fashionable, aren't practical. Just looking for an actual problem that we were experiencing as the target market really helped us have an innate understanding of what the product needed to be, because, at the end of the day, we were the target consumer. |
Broadway Takes Over Times Square for Annual Free Concert9/20/2012 |
Where can you see superheroes, cheerleaders, orphans, and turn-of-the-century newsboys together in New York City? Once again, Times Square was shut down for the 20th Annual Broadway on Broadway. The free concert kicked off the fall Broadway season with performances from both upcoming and current productions. TODAY Show c-host Kathie Lee Gifford hosted the concert which was sponsored by The Broadway League and The Times Square Alliance. “In an increasingly virtual world, live performances like Broadway become more important than ever as a way to give people a direct powerful and personal experience,” said President of the Times Square Alliance, Tim Tompkins. Broadway on Broadway is an effort of the organization to attract not only theater aficionados, but also to lure more casual fans with free performances from some of the hottest shows. Thousands of Broadway fans crowed the blocks between 46th & 47th streets between Broadway and Seventh Avenue for the show which featured performances by such highly acclaimed musicals as Chicago, Mammia Mia!, SPIDER-MAN: Turn Off The Dark, and this year’s Tony Award winner for Best Musical, Once. New hits Bring It On: The Musical and Newsies also performed. Musicals set to debut this season such as Annie, Elf, Motown: The Musical, and Scandalous: The Life and Trials of Aimee Semple McPherson made special appearances and gave the audience a sneak-peak at what can be expected on Broadway this season. |
