Five School Things You Won't Miss This Summer

5/5/2013

It’s apparent that we are all proud to be Longhorns. But with summer vacation coming up, we can’t help but count down the days until we can lay out in the sun all day and do nothing. Of course, we’re all going to miss the freedom and the themed parties that happen in West Campus, but who can deny sleeping in and lounging about with no appointments or meetings? For those who have 8 a.m.'s, I give you kudos. Here are five things I know you won’t miss during your break.

Four Ways To Relax

4/9/2013

With finals just around the corner, it’s hard not to feel a little stressed out. On top of finals, there’s that presentation due next week and all those papers that are waiting to be done. Where do you find time to even breathe in the midst of all the jumbled reminders in your head and planner? Step away from the PCL and your apartment for a few minutes, collegiettes. Too much stress and studying can literally wear you out and cause you to become a little less you and a little more like the stand-offish girl who doesn’t want to share any of her pencils on test day. It’s time to relax before you hit the books.

How To Get a Tan this Spring

3/17/2013

Spray tan and tanning beds are a given. But if you’re looking to get that natural tan from the sun before summer, here are some tips to perfect that golden brown skin.

Sunscreen I know what you’re thinking: Why would I put on sunscreen if I’m trying to expose my skin to the sun? Sunscreen protects your skin from dangerous rays and will prevent you from red sunburns. A sunscreen with an SPF of 10 or 15 will protect your skin while you develop the tan of your preference. Of course, a higher SPF will protect your skin from getting any darker, so make sure you get the one you’re looking for. Many people put on sunscreen every 3-4 hours depending on how dark they want to get or how light they want to stay. Make sure to put sunscreen on your entire body; everything that is being exposed to the sun should be ‘sun-screened.’ If you’re going to be swimming, make sure your sunscreen is waterproof! There’s also a different sunscreen for faces if you’re picky about your protection.

Stephen Ramirtha "Smiles" his Way Through Life

2/18/2013

I’m sure we all remember Pokémon and how popular it was to “catch them all.” I mean, I collected Pokémon cards, traded them and will never forget how happy I was when I finally beat Blue Version on my GameBoy. Although many of us have moved past that Pokémon craze, it’s still alive and well.

Public relations senior Stephen Ramirtha, better known as ‘Smiles,’ reps Pokémon and all video games we know and love including those we might not be familiarized with.

He approached me with a huge smile on his face; no surprise there. While reaching out his hand for a welcome shake, I noticed the light blue sweatbands with PokéBalls on it that he wore on both of his wrists, his over the shoulder backpack with Mario on it and his necklace of a cross from James Avery that hung around his neck.

Smiles is the marketing director for TSTV, and is also the producer for Videogame Hour Live where he oversees each episode.

“I’m there for whenever anyone needs help with editing or if anyone has questions,” Smiles said. “It might not be my project itself, but I help them out anyway. As a producer, we make sure that the final product is out and we also make quick decisions when things go wrong; like whether or not we should go live or just do it again. It’s about thinking on the fly.”

You might also see Smiles handing out flyers about TSTV on the West Mall in order to gain more viewers. “For the marketing of TSTV, I’m that crazy guy promoting the shows,” he said.

How to Survive Engagement Season

1/28/2013

You go out to lunch with a few of your friends at the Mellow Mushroom right on The Drag and you notice that your BFF looks happier than usual. You don’t suspect anything because you figure she’s just having a good day. After all of you place your orders, she tells everyone that she has some ‘exciting news’. As the words come out of her mouth, she quickly pulls out her left hand with excitement.

“HE PROPOSED LAST NIGHT,” she shrieks. After everyone gawks over the huge diamond on her finger, you couldn’t help but smile and be happy for her. She starts sharing the details of the sentimental proposal while people cut her off with questions, asking her how surprised she was or how happy she is. When you get home, you can’t help but think about when you’re going to get engaged. To get your mind off of it, you log onto Facebook (maybe playing some Solitaire will distract you). But as soon as you sign in, you notice the diamond on the upper right corner of the screen. What is this? More of your friends are getting engaged? You check to see who else is getting married, and it seems like everyone you know is.

Stick to your New Year's Resolutions

12/10/2012

Now that 2012 is coming to an end (hopefully not what the Mayans say may be the complete end), it’s time to start thinking of what you’re going to do differently for 2013.

From Lagos to the Forty Acres: Tolu Kalejaiye

12/3/2012

Originally from Lagos, Nigeria, Tolu Kalejaiye came to UT to study computer science. Now a junior, he’s an active member in ASA where he performed and choreographed the guys’ dances in Fest Africa, and SOFC where he plays soccer. He recently joined Men of Excellence, a fairly new organization targeting minority groups dedicated to mentor first-year male students.

HCTX: Why did you decide to join the organizations you are in? Tolu: I joined ASA as a freshman because I was hoping to meet more Africans here. It’s one of my favorites out of the ones I’m in. The people are great and it’s a lot of fun. I joined Men of Excellence because at that time, I felt as if I wasn’t involved in enough organizations on campus. I felt like I should try to take more of a leadership role and initiative. When I got the offer to join, I took it. It seemed like a great opportunity. I joined SOFC because I love playing soccer.
