Spring Fling: Get your perfect dress

5/5/2012

In high school this time of year may be referred to as “Prom Fever”. Girls get excited about picking the perfect dress, to match with the perfect date all topped off with a perfect up-do. Just because we’re over the age of 18 does not mean that college girls can’t get just as excited about a new dress! This time of year has a spring formal every weekend, for better or for worse we all have some summer weddings to go to, and for us seniors a new graduation dress is necessity. Here are some fresh styles of dresses for your Spring Fling!

The Bandage Dress is a great style for a spring formal. It’s tight and form-fitting which makes it a little sexy, but the cap sleeves and a longer length keep it classy.

The Short Formless Mini is a great pick for something more casual and fun. If you get this dress with some sequins it can be a great formal option because it shows your fun side. Or if you pick it out in a light pastel it would be perfect for an outdoor summer wedding.

The Short in the Front, Long in the Back is a new maxi dress that is hitting racks in every store. This dress is a great option for a more formal wedding with a sleek pair of pumps. And don’t discount this one for formal if you’re wanting to look a little more glamorous.

Dacey Orr: Music Never Sounded So Sweet

5/4/2012

One of the hottest internships to snag in Knoxville is the coveted position at AC Entertainment: a forerunner in all things live music. They book, create, produce and market singers and concerts, one of their biggest claims to fame being Bonnaroo music festival. Dacey Orr, a senior in journalism and electronic media, has been interning for this musical powerhouse since she was a junior. Acting as the Social Media Marketing Intern, Dacey has some stories to tell and a genuine love for music.

Her Campus: Now you’re from Georgia, so how did you hear about AC Entertainment?

Dacey Orr: I had interned for the two summers beforehand at Paste Magazine in Atlanta, and worked with them at Bonnaroo in Manchester. Working on site at the festival was one of the most exciting parts of my internship, so after the second year I came home and looked into who was behind the festival. When I found out AC Entertainment was based in the town where I went to school, I was immediately dying to find a way to get involved.

HC: When you first applied and interviewed, were just interested in being able to work with music or did you want work in social media?

DO: I really just wanted to work with the company; my previous internship had involved shooting live music, so I knew I was interested in promoting or booking concerts, but I was definitely willing to learn about any department where they could put me. It worked out that they were just adding the social media/street team internship when I was applying, so I got to see that develop while I was there.

Bond, Meredith Bond: Gettin’ Fit

4/30/2012

This girl has a passion for fitness and living life well. She has a plan to move to California to live in the rays, while she’s already spent a semester abroad in Australia. But for Meredith Bond, fitness is at the pinnacle of living any life well. She is Zumba certified and teaches group fitness classes at the TRECS for…fun!

Her Campus: How did you become so interested in fitness, and then wanting to teach it?

Meredith Bond: I guess it originally routes back to being on a high school dance team and always having a personal trainer in the off season.  I first tried Zumba a few years ago at home and fell in love with it; it’s the perfect outlet for the “retired dancer.”  I just recently started teaching all other types of classes (Body Sculpt, Cycling, Body Blast Boot Camp, etc.).  It’s always great to vary your workouts to keep your body guessing -- that’s what gets you results!

HC: Where does your inspiration come from when you plan a routine for a class?

MB: As far as my Zumba classes go I turn to my regulars [students].  I know which dances they like best – but I try to mix fan favorites with a couple new routines, different styles, and varying intensity levels to get the best hour workout possible.  With my other classes, I try to make each class different to keep the students [and their body’s] guessing.  I always do workouts that I enjoy doing as well as teaching– I make them tough enough to make you feel it the next day, but not too tough to scare anyone away!  Group fitness is all about your students so a lot of times I turn to them for input.

HC: What kinds of fitness or exercises are you really interested in but haven’t gotten to try yet? Any certifications you still want to get?

School's Almost Out For the Summer: Finals Playlist 2012

4/28/2012

For me personally, this is last last week of school I’ll ever have, but for others it’s equally as sweet. This time of year is filled with excitement for what the summer will bring, and the fact that classes are over. If you’re lucky enough to only have a few finals here and there, you can go out Friday through next two weeks catapulting you right into summer 2012. This playlist is here to guide you along the next two weeks into what I’m sure will be a very eventful time. Summer is in the air!

Summer Modest Mouse – This song is an oldy, but a goody in the sense that it gets me pumped for summer every time I hear it.

Summer Girls LFO – Now the majority of us were between the ages 8 to 10 when this sound hit us, but there’s a never a time we don’t get excited when it comes on the radio.

Cruel Summer Bananarama – And for this one, we weren’t even alive, but that just means it’s a classic. Blue Crush memories!

In The Summertime Mungo Jerry – Puts a smile on almost anyone’s face.

Those Summer Nights John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John – Great movie; great song. And you can sing really loud to this one.

Summer Love Justin Timberlake – No one does it like JT.

Easter Playlist: Enjoy your ride

4/7/2012

I personally love driving through the lush, green hills of the great state of Tennessee for a little “me time”. Whether you’re just driving a few hours to return to UT after being home for Easter, or returning from somewhere further like Memphis, everybody needs a good jam session for the ride. Here’s a list of songs I’ve been particularly in to recently that think will make you a very happy driver…or passenger!

Watch out Boyfriends, it's April Fools Day!

3/31/2012

The origin of April Fool’s Day is widely disputed, but one thing we can all agree on is that everyone loves a good prank. As we all know, girls, sometimes our boyfriends can get a little complacent or comfortable, and when that times comes, a prank is in order! Maybe they don’t show the appreciation for you that they once did, or maybe they stopped doing all the those thoughtful, sweet surprises for you, or maybe you just are feeling sneaky and want to stick to him. Either way, here are some easy pranks to put that boyfriend in line.

Non-Smoking, Please: If your boyfriend has that bad habit of smoking cigarettes, either when drinking or sober, and you’re ready for him to quit, here’s a funny way to get his attention. Rub all the filter ends of the cigs with Orajel or some sort of numbing ointment. Once they dry and he lights up, his mouth be numb! This will make him kind of enjoy smoking more, or scare him into quitting.

H2O? No!: Now maybe others don’t run into this issue, but I personally cannot stand it when people do not refill the Brita filter after they enjoy a nice, cold glass of water. This leaves the next person (usually me) with a bone-dry filter and mouth like the Sahara. Go down to University Liquors, get a fifth of something nasty like Taaka, pour it into the pitcher and let it get nice and chilled. When your boyfriend comes back in from working out or playing in an intramural football game and he goes for a cold glass of water, he’ll be shocked when it’s really a glass of below-average vodka. This will teach him to always be kind and rewind…or refill.

Sarah Fink: Ad Gal in the Big Apple

2/25/2012

The University of Tennessee offers many opportunities for their students to gain experience in their four (or five) years in college. One of the best opportunities offered is a trip to New York City with the Journalism or Public Relations and Advertising school to network where students receive a taste of the real world in their respective field.

Her Campus: Sarah, how was your time spent in New York City with the Advertising school a few weeks ago?

Sarah Fink: It was amazing. You hear about all these people who are obsessed with New York but being there, and visiting some of advertising’s greatest agencies, was enough to make any girl fall in love.

HC: Completely understandable. What kinds of experience did you gain?

SF: We met with two different agencies or companies every day. And at each agency we met with a UT ad grad and also, usually, a human resources professional (These are the people you ACTUALLY want to impress because if it comes to it, they’ll be the ones on the other side of the desk at the interview). They would give us a presentation on their clients and how their agency works and then answer tons of questions. It was great because we were hearing advice from people who sat in our very seats not too long ago. To see UT alum who have made the New York dream come true was very inspiring.

HC: Do you feel more prepared for entering the real world?

SF: Absolutely. Not only does it break the ice with visiting what can be very intimidating places, but I now have connections with people who can introduce me to the right people when I look for a job. Plus, it’s always reassuring to have someone other than your professors (God love ‘em) to check over your resume for you.

Valentine's Statistics - Enjoyable for single and taken alike

2/16/2012

To round out a week focused on all things Valentine's, I wanted to share some interesting statistics about the holiday of love.

Now, I think we all know that drugstores love Valentine’s Day because of the copious amounts of sappy greeting cards, chocolate heart-shaped candies and fluffy teddy bears they sell. Despite already knowing that, I was astounded at the number of these items actually sold. And whether you’re single or not, these V-day statistics will grab your attention.

The Dumping: 53 percent of women in America would dump their boyfriend if he did not get them a gift.

Love Notes: 180 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged annually, making it the second-most popular greeting-card-giving occasion AND 50 percent of all V-day cards purchased, were bought within six days of the holiday!

The Sweets:  More than 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are sold each year for Valentine’s Day.

Pretty Stems: $403 million worth of cut flowers are sold, and Valentine’s Day is the number one holiday for florists.

Shiny Stuff: $2.2 billion of jewelry merchandise are sold in the United States with 1,753 jewelry manufacturers.

What’s Love Got To Do With It: 15 percent of women buy themselves flowers or candy on Valentine’s Day to cheer them up!
