Former VSAAC President Josh Richards

4/27/2012

What activities are you involved in on campus?
I was president of VSAAC (Varsity Student Athlete Advisory Committee and member of the Men's Soccer Team.

What made you want to be involved in VSAAC?
I have always played soccer so I knew I wanted to continue that in college. I also was heavily involved in community service in middle school and high school so I wanted to continue that in college as well. I knew
VSAAC would be a great way to leverage my opportunities to do what I wanted as far as community service.

How did you find time to balance your activities through out college?
Time management and passion are the biggest keys. If you can manage your time well then you should be alright in college with whatever you do. Also, if you have passion for the things you do, there should never be the question about finding time to balance everything, but instead you should feel privileged that you are allowed to do all these things.

How are you adapting to no longer being a varsity athlete?
Loving life. I have massive amounts of free time for other activities
I want to partake in that I did not have before being an athlete.

Hungry for more: On the Hunger Games

4/21/2012

So, I have to admit, I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I agreed to see the midnight showing of the hunger games. I had not read any of the books, I had no idea what the movie was about; I don’t think I had even seen the movie trailer, but hey… I’m always up for the movies.

We arrived about an hour early, (which I thought was a bit excessive) and still could only find seats in a back corner. The place was packed with dedicated fans. There were costumes involved.

In the hour leading up to the movie, while the rest of theater was a buzz with banter about their favorite Hunger Games Book, I was busy playing a little hunger game of my own: finish the large popcorn before the movie starts so we get a free refill. Yes. We won.

Two Hours and twenty-two minutes, a few tears, and a large soda later, my mind was blown. The hunger game concept completely blew me out of the water. I was on the edge of my seat the whole movie, and wanted to see more when the film was over.

So, I went out and purchased the first book and finished it in a week, reading it in my spare time. The second and third books soon followed.

The thing about the Hunger Games is, it is not far off.

All-American Soccer Player Ellen Coleman

What is your major?
My major is Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Chemical Engineering.

When did you start playing soccer? Why?
I started playing soccer when I was 5 or 6 years old.  I wore my Mia Hamm jersey probably 3 days a week in grade school.

Why did you choose UR?
When I was choosing colleges, I knew I wanted to play Division III soccer and also wanted to attend a strong academic university.  A number of Universities in the UAA conference fit those standards. I went to University summer soccer camps and afterwards I decided to go on overnight visits to a few UAA Universities, UR included.  My visit to Rochester was what really affected my decision. I felt that I would fit in really well with the girls that I met and stayed with.  Terry and Sike, my coaches, were also a huge part of my decision. They were both extremely welcoming and enthusiastic throughout the entire recruitment process, and I was excited about the opportunity to play for them.

How would others describe you?
I think other people would describe me as intense and focused but still able to have fun.

How would you describe your academic experience at UR?
My academic experience so far has been challenging but also rewarding.  As I've progressed for the past 3 years as a BME major the classes have been increasingly difficult, but I've developed such close ties with my fellow students.  Our class of BME majors has developed into a tight knit community that makes dealing with our course load so much easier.  Our professors are also seriously committed to their students' success, and have been an extremely helpful resource for me over the past 3 years.

Meet IFC President Matt Skurnick

3/29/2012

What activities are you involved in on campus?
I am a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, the Inter-Fraternity Council, and play Rugby.

How do you find time to balance your activities?
Google Calendars are a miracle.

As chairman of IFC, what is something you think students should know about the organization?
The more united IFC can be, the stronger its organizations will become.  IFC is an advocate for fraternities and a resource for its chapters to get information and help.

Is there anything you are aiming to achieve while in the position of chairman?
More trust and communication between IFC and administration.  It's a
shame that we are not more open with each other on important issues.

What are you looking forward to in your senior year at the university?
Hopefully winning another state championship with the rugby team,
enjoying the year, and figuring out what I want to do with my life.

Any words of advice for underclassmen?
Be involved in whatever organization(s) you join.  The more you do and take on, the more you'll get out of your time and the organization.

The Remarkable Professor Memmott

1. When did you first join the University of Rochester staff?

I started in the fall of 1995 with one section of Reporting and Writing the News. That seems like a long time ago, but some things remain the same. Students are always unhappy about parking -- or the lack thereof -- on campus. They are always suspicious (maybe with reason) that the administration will take away their constitutional right to have Dandelion Day.

2. What is your favorite class to teach?

I usually like the one I'm with, but if I only could teach one it would be Feature Writing. We read some really terrific non-fiction prose, and the students get to try their hand at writing stories with more flavor than the basic news story.

3. What are you involved in outside of teaching classes?

I retired from the Democrat and Chronicle in 2007 but still write a weekly column for the paper. It's called Good News, kind of a strange label, but it means I can write about happy things and stay away from politics and crime. I also do freelance stories for the paper, which allows me to continue to report and roam about, notebook in hand. Beyond that, there's some volunteering and too much time, I imagine, sitting around with friends and drinking coffee or other beverages.

4. What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

In lieu of running, which I used to do a lot of, I ride my bike, looking for routes that are always downhill. My wife, Cindy, and I go to a lot of movies and travel some, always to Maine in the summer. There are grandchildren to indulge.

5. Any advice to the graduating seniors?

How do you keep all your activities balanced?
Well Keegan funny you should ask ,I'm really lucky to have a good group of friends who keep me in check. They make sure I don't get too busy and keep me sane.

What would you like to accomplish in your last year here at UR?
I would love for my team to make it to the Liberty League Finals. We have been working our butts off this year and want to prove that we have what it takes to make it.

What are your plans for next year?
Next year I am planning on attending law school.

Do you have any advice for underclasswomen?
I would just say to live it up. The four years go by so fast and it was one of the best times of my life.
