Fall in (love with) Bloomington

10/10/2010

Every Hoosier will tell you.

Fall in Bloomington is a beautiful, dizzying collage of red and orange and yellow, cashmere scarves and riding boots, pumpkin carving and pumpkin spice lattes, bonfires in backyards and beer pong on porches.

We're finally hitting the books (Farewell, summer!), catching our strides and testing every combination of cream and crimson for the best homecoming get-ups. (Think face paint and pin-striped overalls.)

It's the perfect example of right place, right time.

Heat wave, in October? That's Indiana for you. Erika and I shed our cardigans to walk around campus and enjoy the 80-degree weather.

We spot a dancer breaking it down outside of the Collins Living-Learning Center. Nutella Fest III, an all-day musical festival where students are encouraged to indulge in jars and jars of the creamy confection, featured musical acts of all styles. (Read more about it here.)

Do I have anything in my teeth? (Capturing Erika Hall '12 covered in Nutella is my duty as her BFF. Here's one for the scrapbook!)

Any given view could be on a postcard. Have we mentioned we love Bloomington?

Leaf fight! Just another spontaneous act of fall love.

James Mactaggart '13

9/30/2010

Cheerio, ladies.  James Mactaggart '13 can't go anywhere without hearing some excited young woman scream: "Draco! Draco Malfoy! Can I have your autograph?!"

And like your favorite character in Harry Potter, his charm is magical.

Full name: James Campbell Mactaggart

Year: Sophomore

Hometown: Oxford, England

Major: Sports Marketing & Management

Hobbies: Rugby, and hanging around with my mates

What do you look for in a woman?
Pretty eyes and a great smile

How would you describe your personal style?
I’m pretty much a walking stereotype, so I always wear three-piece suits and bowler hats.

What do you want to do with your life?
I haven't really thought too much about that. Right now I’m focusing a lot on my studies and rugby, but I’d love to get a good job after graduation and settle down over here eventually.

What have you learned from being at IU?
IU’s been great—I've definitely learned a lot. The most important thing? Life's full of opportunities and we have to make the most of them.

Nicole's Story: My Best Friend Beat Cancer

9/25/2010

Today, we marched in celebration. One year, three months and two days ago, Nicole Aders defeated cancer.

But, like in many great battles, victory wasn’t won without overcoming tragedy.

College Girls Dating (Much) Older Men

7/17/2010

When 21-year-old Mary, a junior from the University of Minnesota, met her boyfriend Erik, sparks didn’t initially fly.

“He was charming, too charming,” she says, recalling the day they first encountered one another while working for a local political campaign. “I thought he was just nice to everyone.”

The computer technician, who she affectionately refers to as a “computer geek,” enthusiastically extended a bronzed, muscular arm to everyone he met. He smiled broadly, laughed easily and his blue eyes sparkled when he spoke of saving the earth—something Al Franken, the liberal who was to earn their votes, promised to strive toward as Minnesota’s next senator.

Mary was intrigued. His gregarious nature made her nervous, but she couldn’t resist when he asked, “Wanna go rock climbing?”

What followed were two tumultuous, euphoric, bizarre years of talking, biking, kissing and a wide variety of “outdoorsy things”—as well as a continuous stream of judgmental looks and snide remarks from others.

Safeguard your romance: 10 secrets to lock up forever

6/16/2010

Ah, secrets:

Hilarious when a giggle-laced whisper is directed into your ear, but paranoia-inflicting when muffled laughter erupts two seats behind you.

Often times Americans romanticize the hushed exchanges as gateways to intimacy.  Picture close friends divulging dirty details over tissues and FroYo, new couples revealing personal matters during those long-lasting, late night phone calls, “I won’t tell you!” becoming “Don’t ever tell a soul!”

Knowing something special, something juicy, of which the general public hasn’t the slightest suspicion—that’s just fun. Exclusivity tightens the bond, and deeper understanding boosts closeness and comfort.

But not all secrets help pull a pair together. In romantic relationships, experts say some things are better left unsaid.

“Even though you're part of a twosome, your relationship will thrive if you maintain a private side," Marti Olsen Laney, PsyD, coauthor of The Introvert and Extrovert in Love, toldCosmopolitan in an interview this year. "Plus, some things might hurt your partner, so keeping them quiet prevents needless stress on your bond."

Let’s explore the difference between sharing the cute and admitting the catastrophic.
