Get a Spring Wardrobe on a College Budget

4/15/2013

While the unpredictable Texas weather may have us thinking otherwise, the calendar shows that it’s springtime, which means that spring fashion season is upon us. On a student budget, it can be hard to update your wardrobe every few months. Here are some tips every fashion-savvy collegiette should know about adding new pieces to your closet without maxing out your credit card.

5 EDM Artists You Should Know

4/1/2013

EDM is all the rave, er — rage, right now. From dance beats diffusing into mainstream radio, to EDM events attracting thousands of fans each year, to house giants (and newly separated) Swedish House Mafia heading up music festivals like Coachella, electronic music is everywhere. And there’s more to it than one might think; new genres and sub-genres are constantly popping up every other month.

David Elkin: Making People Dance at SXSW

3/4/2013

Most of us are daydreaming about spring break: the tan you’re going to get at the beach, the sleep you’re going to catch up on at home or the bands you’re going to see at South by Southwest. Plan II junior David Elkin is not only gearing up for who he’s going to see at SXSW, but who he’s going to play in front of as an official showcasing artist.

As one part of the electronic duo Bagheera, he’ll DJ during Austin’s biggest festival of the year.

HC Texas: For readers to have a little bit of background on Bagheera, how did it get started?

David Elkin: I've been a part of Bagheera since the summer of 2011 when Aidan (the other member) and I started DJ'ing around Houston. That's how we initially started out: just DJ'ing without any of our own music at various clubs and DJ nights around the city. The original stuff is a recent development, and we knew we had to get serious with performing when we realized we'd be playing with Ghostland Observatory as our first show. That kind of forced us to sit down and think about what it was we wanted to do with our live set.

HCTX: Is it hard balancing that with classes and other things you're involved in?

An Anti-Valentine’s Day Playlist

2/11/2013

While the taken ladies are giddy with excitement over the surprises their guys have in store for them this Valentine’s Day, us single gals choose not to acknowledge the annual day of amor. Or, if you’re like me, you would have forgotten it existed if it weren’t for the heart-shaped balloons slapping you in the face at the grocery store. The point being, whether you love or hate being single, embrace it this Valentine’s Day with this playlist of anti-love songs.

Listen to the tracks here, on Spotify.

Haim – Don’t Save Me

Forget being a damsel in distress. As these three sisters echo, we don’t need a man to save us.

Calvin Harris feat. Florence Welch – Sweet Nothing

There’s nothing like bumping a Florence anthem to make a helpless situation seem a little bit easier. Even when things don’t work out, we still have to put ourselves out there. “It’s hard to love” – so sing your heart out.

Miike Snow – Song for No One

This song has an air of coolness about it for all the collegiettes who are just going with the flow. This one goes out to: no one.  And that’s just the way we like it.

Icona Pop feat. Charli XCX – I Love It

For the ladies who had the courage to kick their loser exes to the curb – and it feels so good.

Soundsystem Fest

10/26/2012

Austin is no stranger to music events that appeal to unique facets of the city's music scene. One niche that has yet to be tapped into, however, is the electronic dance music (EDM) scene. This is about to change with a new event that will launch this Halloween at ACL Live. On Sixth Street you can barely move among the masses, but at Soundsystem Fest, get ready to dance the night away.

Soundsystem Fest brings together top electronic music artists and stellar production to create a one-of-a-kind sensory experience. From lights and lasers to smoke and sound, designers and producers are working hard to make sure that Halloween in Austin is never the same.

“This show is going to blow minds,” said Jon Pleeter of ICM Partners, who is producing the event.

The atmosphere being just as important as the music, The Moody Theater will undergo a complete makeover for Halloween night. The experience and cutting edge set design have been carefully orchestrated by top designers in the field, who's clients include household electronic names like Daft Punk, Kaskade and Deadmau5.

The acts span from an international to a local level, with British Grammy-award-winning house trio Dirty Vegas and Australian duo Flight Facilities, along with special sets from several local artists. American DJ duo Classixx and remix artist RAC add even more star power to the stellar lineup.

Her Campus Texas had the privilege of speaking with the founder and principal artist of RAC, Remix Artist Collective, André Allen Anjos. Soundsystem Fest will be Andre’s first time back in Austin since playing a few shows during South by Southwest.

“I mean I love South by but, it’s very chaotic,” he said.
