Learning about my natural hair has been a commitment that’s consisted of familiarization and experimentation with protective styling, haircuts, and hair dyes. And, throughout this journey – and throughout my many hair changes – I’ve realized that my hair creates my identity as a woman of empowerment and boldness.
Between taking risks with my natural curls and wearing my shaved head as a fundamental representation of women, every change I make to my natural hair requires me to live in the moment. It also allows me to learn about my beautiful bouncy curls and teaches me how to rock a shaved head.
No matter which look I’ll go for next, here’s how I embrace my natural hair, and what I’ve learned so far on my natural hair journey.
Wash Day
After I shaved my head, I needed an effective hair care regimen that would strengthen and maintain the health of my curls as my hair grew back. So, I started to ease my way into finger-detangling my hair when styling and having “Wash-Days” on Sundays.
My wash day with my TWA (teeny weeny afro) consists of a shampoo and conditioner set that emphasizes the importance of cleansing, strengthening, and shining for my pop of curls, while also locking in moisture and hydrating my hair with natural ingredients.
Color Treating
Throughout my natural hair journey, I’ve experimented with different hair colors, and explored which suited me best. I even learned how to dye my hair at home using semi-permanent colors! My favorite color so far has been copper-red because of how it complimented my skin tone. But, it’s important to know how to take care of your hair once you dye it, so you can be sure to treat it properly. I take care of my colored hair with a hair treatment mask to help intensify the balance between moisture and nourishment.
STYLING
Learning how to style your natural hair can be a challenge, but it can be fun to experiment with styling techniques and products while you identify what hairstyles fit you best.
For me, styling my TWA started as a wash-and-go technique. After washing my hair with shampoo and conditioner, I continue styling my damp hair (using techniques like finger coiling!) with hydrating products that define my curl pattern. Styling cream and curling gel are a great go-to combo to smooth frizz and elongate my wash-and-go to a couple of days.
Learning to love your natural hair is a personal journey that I definitely encourage you to embrace! No matter what part of your hair journey you’re on, Ulta Beauty has you covered with products to keep your hair healthy at any style or stage.
