These Makeup-Only Halloween Costume Ideas Are So Easy

It is officially spooky season! While the last two years have been scary enough with new viruses (ahem, thanks, COVID-19), natural disasters, and the state of the economy, there are still some spooktacular things to get excited about. As Halloween approaches, everyone celebrates it differently. Whether you plan to sit and carve pumpkins in your dorm, or are aiming to win best-dressed at the costume party, there’s something for everyone to celebrate on All Hallow’s Eve.

Finding the right costume could pose a challenge. Found the cutest costume but it’s freezing on campus? Or perhaps you realized at the last minute that everyone on campus decided to go as the exact same bumble bee as you this year. Luckily, I’ve rounded up the best makeup-only Halloween costumes for you. If you’re low on money or energy and want something quick and easy so you can participate in the spooky festivities, this article is for you. From sexy clowns to cute kittens, you can get a range of looks using your best palettes and brushes!

Tinkerbell

Channel your inner spoiled fairy and transform into Tinkerbell. What’s great about this look is that it’s all in the eyes! Start with a good eyeshadow primer (my favorite is the Anastasia Beverly Hills primer) and go in with your best green palette. Start with a dark green on the outer lid, mid-tone for a transition color and a mint green for the corners. Top it off with gold glitter in the corners and a dramatic wing. You can even use face crystals to add some flare to your wing, and voila! A little pixie dust working its magic.

Classic kitten

You can never go wrong with a pink (or black) nose and drawn-on whiskers. If you’re in a rush or don’t want to do a full face, you only need the basics for this look: brow gel, eyeliner, and mascara. Start by fluffing up your brows with a clear gel (think black cat with fur standing up but… sexier), then apply freckles on both sides of your cheeks using the tip of your eyeliner.

Draw a triangle on the center of your nose and fill it with pink lipstick (or with black eyeliner if you’re feeling extra angst-y) and use your mascara for dramatic lashes. Finish it off with a black lipstick like this one from NYX and you’ll have the whole campus purring. If you’re feeling extra spicy, you can use fake blood to create cat scratches on your neck or on the cheek.

Violet Beauregarde

Okay, so while Charlie & the Chocolate Factory wasn’t exactly a Halloween film, there are definitely some moments that still haunt me. If you remember anything about the film, you’ll remember when one of the ticket winners, aptly named Violet, turned, well… violet. After chewing a large wad of gum, she turned blue — and now you can too (but you won’t be carried away by Oompa Loompas, I promise).

Achieve the look of the classic scene with an iridescent glow by starting with a full face of foundation, and layering iridescent purple and blue eyeshadow (I highly recommend the Colourpop Supershock Shadow in Dream Much) on your nose and around the bridge until you resemble a sparkly blueberry. Finish the look with a pale pink matte lipstick and your favorite flavor of bubblegum and you’re guaranteed to be blue with… well, bubblegum.

Sexy Joker

If you take life a little bit too seriously, this costume is for you. We could all use a little Joker in our lives, which is why it makes the perfect costume. Start with a white base (I recommend the white foundation from Haus Labs). You’ll want to do a bold and dramatic eye by doing a black waterline and a bold, sharp wing.

Now comes the fun part. Make this look super sexy by applying a sexy, blood-red lipstick and finish it with doe lips, or go for the more I’m-a-little-psycho vibe by smearing the lipstick as a smile across your lower cheekbones, just as the Joker would wear it. And if you’re starting to feel embarrassed, just remember the Joker slogan: Why so serious?
