8 Ways to Stay Positive & Stress free

As the semester comes to a close, I cannot help but notice the levels of stress have gone up.  Being a college student juggling school, athletics, sleep, and a social life, it can be quite difficult. Depression and anxiety are serious issues that can be eased by simply having a positive attitude. Everything may not be perfect but I am here to tell you it is going to be okay. This is what I always try to do to stay positive:

1. Start each day by listing five things you are thankful for.

The morning reminder of things like my family, friends, a college education, my teammates, and a warm place to sleep is the perfect way to begin my day.

2. Constantly Smile.

I go through my day constantly smiling. I read a quote once that said, “Smiling not only releases endorphins but it also causes other people to smile.” By smiling you are not only making yourself happy but also something so simple can make another person’s day a little bit brighter.

3. Get out.

On bad days, I know that it seems best to lie around and cry. I’ve found that this will only make you feel worse.  Most things in life are completely out of our control, however I understand it is easy to get overwhelmed by certain situations. I go on runs or walk around Colonial Williamsburg with my best friend.

4. Vent.

Sometimes all you need to do is talk. Getting out and venting about the situation will help you to move on.

5. Always make the best of every situation.

My mom always told me to make the best out of every situation. Nothing in life will ever be perfect and it is too short to be miserable every moment. Your life may seem very terrible but I promise you it will be okay.

6. Breathe.

Sometimes all you need to do is take a deep breath and tell yourself it is going to be okay. I try really focusing on my breath and imagine the stress leaving my body.

7. Think of other people in worse situations.

There is someone out there in a more difficult situation and they are making it through.  You can do it too!

8. Make time for breaks.

All work and no play will cause serious amounts of stress. Try taking study break to go on walks or get ice cream.

9. Have ME time.

Me time is crucial in college. It is important to be comfortable with yourself and being alone.  Sometimes all you need to do is be alone and that’s okay!

10. Confidence is key!

If you believe in yourself anything is possible! Keep moving forward! I am rooting for you!
