Healthier Alternatives to Those Crazy Cravings

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winthrop chapter.

I can be the first one to say that I LOVE food. By love food, I seriously mean LOVE food. The Tastemade videos on Facebook are what I look forward to seeing every day, and it gets me even more excited about food than I should be. But on the flip side, I love the fact that we can enjoy daily cravings without worrying about waking up the next day as big as a house! Here are a few substitutions to get that salty or sweet fix…

Chips

We all know that there’s no such thing as eating “just a few chips” but with sweet potato chips, you’re free to eat them all day, shamelessly!

  • Sweet potato

  • Extra-virgin olive oil

  • Sea salt

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees, cut potatoes pretty thin, drizzle with olive oil. Bake for 22 to 25 mins (flipping once), sprinkle with salt and serve!

  • Other alternatives:

    • Butternut squash chips

    • Kale chips

    • Tomato chips

    • Zucchini chips

Ice Cream

Don’t get me wrong… ice cream is a beautiful thing, but these frozen yogurt parfait popsicles will change your life!

  • Vanilla Greek yogurt

  • Fruit of your choice

  • Granola

  • Honey

  • Popsicle molds

  • Layer the molds with yogurt, fruit, granola and a drizzle of honey (in this order), freeze over-night, run warm water over the mold and wiggle it out. Yummy!

  • Other alternatives:

    • Frozen chocolate almond butter banana bites

    • Strawberry and banana ice cream sandwiches

    • Peach sorbet

    • Matcha banana ice cream

Candy

Some get so excited over candy, when they should be getting excited over this trail mix!

  • Simply mix together a cup of each:

    • Nut of choice (raw)

    • Salted pumpkin seeds

    • Dried apricots

    • Dark chocolate chips

    • Popcorn (non-buttered)

  • Other alternatives:

    • Frozen grapes

    • Berry salad

    • Popcorn + bits of dark chocolate

    • Granola bars (crunchy, not chewy)

Carbs

Of course I saved the best for last! I know I’m not the only one that can eat pasta all day, every day. It really is the best thing, no doubt… but these substitutes probably won’t send you to the gym as much.

  • Leafy greens (taco shells)

  • Portobello mushrooms (Hamburger buns)

  • Turnips or Carrots (French fries)

  • Zucchini or Eggplant (Lasagna noodles)

  • Oatmeal cakes (Pancakes)

If you can relate to me and can say that food comes before a lot of things in your life, try these healthier (and yummy) alternatives to the junk we love to eat and see if wake up feeling a little more fabulous than yesterday!
