These Up and Coming Black Queens Need a Spot on Your Playlists!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

Recent controversies have led to a call for increased support of black creatives, following protests against anti-black racism and a push for more inclusivity and greater representation. Women have commonly been ridiculed for expressing their true feelings or have been condemned for speaking out against situations and individuals who have put them in vulnerable and abusive situations. These situations show us why empowerment is so crucial, and why now is the perfect time to discover black female artists. Music is one of the greatest ways women have been able to share and relate their experiences, create safe spaces and open conversations. Here are a couple of artists that are empowering women worldwide right now.

Kaash Page

Kaash Page is a singer-songwriter from Dallas, Texas, who first rose to prominence in 2019. Her single ‘Love Songs’ reached the Billboard Hot RnB charts, setting her firmly in the public eye. From featuring on Don Toliver’s song Euphoria alongside Travis Scott to the release of her debut album Teenage Fever, Kaash Page is creating a name for herself as a talented musician whose songs leave one in blissful memory of their youth.

Savannah Re

Toronto native Savannah Re is an up and coming artist more people need to know about. With notable mentions in culture magazines like Fader and The Complex following the release of her single, ‘The Best Is Yet To Come’ in 2018, to catch the eye of notable producers like Babyface, there is no question of her growth. One can only anticipate how much the powerful singer will continue to bring to the table, if the release her of 2020 single ‘Where You Are’ (produced by Grammy award-winning producers Boi-1da and Allen Writer) is anything to go by. Her new single ‘HOMIES’ is definitely on repeat for me!

Bellah

Emerging UK artist Bellah offers an addictive and unique sound in her catchy RnB bops. Her upbeat ballads like ‘Never Loved’ and ‘Something U Like’ have people reminiscing on heartfelt relationships and lovers, and her relatable messages are helping to garner attention for this talented singer. Her most recent release ‘If I Were U’ speaks volumes to girl power and having the men in your life treat you exactly for what you’re worth.
