Pilates is the perfect workout that combines strength and grace, allowing you to feel the power of each movement through every step. As someone who started consistently attending pilates classes, it has become my new ritual in gaining confidence and allowing me to improve in other aspects of my fitness routine. Becoming a “pilates princess” is stepping into a world that allows you to challenge yourself and do things you thought your body could never do. Pilates is one of those things where tracking progress is easy and ultimately rewarding. So, are you ready to pull up those grip socks and step onto the reformer to embark on an incredible journey?
Dress The Part
First, you have to dress the part. I don’t mean anything fancy, but there is a way to step onto the reformer with style. Here are some easy ways to make sure you are “pilates-ready.”
1. Invest in a couple of cute matching sets that make you comfortable and ready to move. I love a good Lululemon Define jacket with a pair of Align shorts, which allow me to move comfortably and efficiently. One-piece rompers and legging sets are also great options for comfort and control. If you want to fit the “pilates princess” aesthetic, opt for a long sleeve ballet wrap top which can easily be paired with leggings or thrown over a one-piece.
2. Purchasing grip socks is a must. For almost all pilates classes, it is mandatory that you wear socks with a grip on the bottom. This is necessary to keep you from slipping or falling during each stretch and exercise on the reformer. There are so many cute socks you can find in different lengths and colors to match your outfits. If you want to channel your inner “pilates princess,” wear ballerina style socks to stay cute and functional.
3. Lastly, do hairstyles that are comfortable and keep hair out of your face. My favorite is a high ponytail. However, you can switch it up. If you want a playful vibe, go for space buns or a slick back bun to really embody a true “pilates princess.”
Strength is Your Crown
Pilates is one of those exercises that truly balances the mind and body. The moves and stretches may seem easy or light, but each step requires core strength and moments where you push yourself along the way. Each move is about precision and control, whether it be on a mat or on a reformer. Remember to breathe through each step and allow each move to flow. Having a routine is so important when it comes to tracking results and seeing real improvement. When I was a beginner, I started going once every other week and eventually started going once a week, building it into my weekly fitness routine. Mixing both mat and reformer pilates is beneficial because I find that mat pilates prepares you for the reformer since reformer pilates can be more difficult. If you are a beginner, I suggest spending one week on the mat and one week on the reformer to keep it consistent and track your progress. If you are taking classes with an instructor, let your instructor know your goals so you can have a better idea of your progress. Being consistent allows you to grow and tap into your inner strength.
Move With Intention
Mindful movement allows you to be in tune with your body and mind through each move. While doing each exercise, I find that positive affirmations like “I am strong,” “I can do this” or “I am one step closer to my goals” help me stay in the right mindset to get through each exercise. Remembering to breathe through each move allows for better flow and control of each movement. Since pilates is all about mindful movement, this principle doesn’t have to be left in the studio. I have found ways to incorporate mindful movement into other aspects of my life including morning stretches, walking, running, or even weightlifting where core and breath control is essential.
Lifestyle and Wellness
Recovery is an important aspect of all fitness routines in order to see physical results. Staying hydrated during and after your pilates routine allows your muscles to bounce back and repair themselves efficiently, reducing soreness. Keeping up with nutrition is another crucial step. Eating three balanced meals a day and making sure to incorporate an energizing snack before your pilates workout promotes faster and better results. Make sure to also get in your beauty sleep. Sleep is an important and often forgotten aspect of fitness recovery, and making sure to get at least eight hours helps you rejuvenate for your next pilates session.
Stepping Into Your Pilates Era
Becoming a true “pilates princess” is all about strength and style. Your mindset guides you to see results and push yourself to new heights. It’s okay to start small and work your way up. There is no timeline or competition, you set the pace. Embrace every stretch, flow and movement and celebrate every victory, big or small. Remember, real crowns come from honoring your body, moving with intention and enjoying the pilates journey every step of the way.
