How to Have Fun on St. Patrick’s Day: Sober Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

There are all kinds of reasons to stay sober in university – health, medication interactions, personal choice, the list goes on and on – but when it comes to St. Patrick’s Day, it can seem impossible to have a good time without having a drink in your hand. As a sober university student who still loves having fun, here are some ways to still enjoy your St. Paddy’s if you choose not to drink.

Eat ALL of the food

Maybe we sober girls aren’t drinking, but we sure are eating! St. Patrick’s Day is a perfect time to try your favourite Irish foods and indulge in special treats. Maybe you and your friends want to try out an Irish pub for dinner or fill up on sweets loaded with green food colouring. Whatever you choose, taking part in the food on St. Patrick’s Day is a great way to get involved.

Have a movie marathon

What better way to celebrate with your friends than a Netflix binge? Take advantage of the day by staying in and spending some much-deserved time off with your best friends. Whether it’s a series that you haven’t had a chance to catch up on or your favourite bad St. Patrick’s Day movie (key search words are “Irish” and “Leprechaun” for finding these), movies make staying in much more fun!

Check out nearby Irish events

From dances to celebrations to pub dinners, take the day to explore the Irish culture and events in the area. Going back to the roots of St. Patty’s can make the day much more meaningful and exposing ourselves to different cultures is always exciting. If you have Irish heritage yourself, this might be a great day to take time with your family and learn a little more about Irish traditions. If not, ask an Irish friend what their favourite pastime is on this special day. Dress up in your favourite green outfit and see what’s out there – there is truly something for everyone!

Go to a party – or better yet, host your own!

Parties are a classic way to enjoy St. Paddy’s – with or without alcohol! Invite some friends over for a St. Patrick’s Day party at your place, complete with green decorations, food and your favourite mocktails. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, brave your way through Ezra Street and the neighbouring house parties for an exciting time. Dance with your friends, sing along to the music and watch the chaos unfold.

Stay in

Sometimes the most fun celebration is no celebration at all. If you’re an introvert or not a fan of parties, take a self-care day and pamper yourself. Taking a bubble bath, getting some homework out of the way or spending some time curled up with a good book are all wonderful ways to have some “me-time.”

Do whatever you want!

At the end of the day, drinking is not a prerequisite for any event and you can take part in whatever makes you happy! Dress in every shade of green you own, chill out with a movie, check out Ezra street or take a self-care day instead! St. Patty’s is a day to celebrate, so whatever you choose to do, treat yourself to an incredible time.
