10 Ways to Handle Stress in a Healthy Way

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

Stress is a normal part of life.  Everyone stresses at some point in time.  It is the way you handle your stress which will change the way your day will go.  If you can handle your stress in a healthy and happy way, your day will go by smoothly, I promise.  I know it is not always easy to do so, but I highly suggest you take time out of your stressful day to complete one out of the 10 things listed on this list.  I know deep down after you’re done, you will be little less stressed and a little more relieved.

1. Take a bath

Go take a bath without your phone! Disconnect from the world for 15 minutes and take out time for yourself.  Think about how amazing you are and make a mental note of all the amazing things you have done lately.

2. Make a calendar

If you are stressed about due dates and what’s happening when you’re not alone.  I am constantly stressing about dates because I am, just like surely you are too, busy busy busy!  Make a calendar and put down these important events.  You are going to feel amazing and ready to take on the world once you are done!

3. Drink tea or coffee

Drink something warm.  Not only does it taste good and boost your mood, but it will help calm you as well.

4. Call someone you love

Call someone you love and talk about life with them.  Tell them all about the good and the bad, and make sure you listen to their good and bad, too.  It’s important to have perspective on life.  Being able to talk all about your ups and downs with someone you love will make you feel a lot calmer, as being able to talk to someone that you care for can make a difference in your day.

5. Get baking

Forget about the world for a minute! Focus on getting those chocolate chip cookies just right!  When you are done baking the cookies, go share them with others; not only is it going to brighten their day, but seeing their happy faces will make your day, too!

6. Clean your room/organize

I stress all the time over a dirty area.  One way to de-stress is to get your workspace clean.  No matter how the rest of the day goes, you know you accomplished something and can feel proud of it.

7. Go work out

Working out is great for de-stressing.  It gives you time to forget about all your other worries and for you to focus just on yourself.  So, do that extra set of squats today, because today is all about you, and you have that time to treat yourself to that exercise!  After leaving the gym, you will feel like a brand new person!

8. Yoga

Good old yoga.  Empty your mind and concentrate on yourself.  Forget about the world around you, right now is all about you.

9. Do an assignment early

If you have the time, start an assignment early!  This will definitely lower your stress as you have accomplished something early, getting rid of a reason to stress!

10. Watch YouTube/Netflix

Finally, good old YouTube and Netflix.  If you are really feeling emotional and the stress is too much, just sit down and watch a few episodes of your favourite show.  I know you will feel better after.  After all the binge-watching, you will have a new perspective on how you look at things, as you have taken a few hours to step back. When you come back to reality, you will see things differently.

Mental health is very important!!! Please don’t ever forget that. Before you take care of that load of laundry that is massive or that assignment that’s due in 2 days, take time to make sure that you are okay.  Take a time out and do something for yourself, you deserve it!
