8 Creative Ways To Stay Connected With Friends and Family Online

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Western chapter.

To keep everyone safe and healthy during the pandemic, we should all be staying at home and only spending time with the people that we live with. Also, we should all be limiting the times that we leave our home to just going to buy groceries, and going for walks or runs.

It’s very important that we continue to wear masks properly and social distance from others that are not living with us. With this, I realize that being socially isolated from your family and friends can be really hard to do.

A really important lesson that I learned during this pandemic is that this all comes down to who actually cares about other people and isn’t acting selfish, while just thinking about themselves. It is important to think about others, not be selfish, and try to keep everyone safe during these pressing times.

With myself being Her Campus Western’s Vice President of Events this school year and having everything online, I have had to get really creative with hosting enjoyable virtual events. Here is a list of some of the events that I have hosted for Her Campus Western so far this year. I hope that these events help everyone have fun while staying connected with their friends and family online this year!

1. Online Games Night

Have an online games night by calling while you play some entertaining games with your family and friends. Some really entertaining games that everyone can easily play for free that I suggest are UNO, Scattergories, and Skribbl. You can even use Mixr and Backyard.co which have games built into a calling service. Have some drinks and play these games with your family and friends!

2. Costume Party and Movie Night

You can call and enjoy a movie together. Maybe even pick a movie series or a movie theme and have everyone dress up as their favourite movie characters!

3. Murder Mystery Night

Play an online Murder Mystery Game while you call one night. There are many free murder mystery game templates that can be found on Google that you can use.

4. Among Us Night

The online game Among Us has been very popular throughout the world during the pandemic. It is an easy and free game for everyone to learn how to play. It can be downloaded on phones, tablets, I-pads and computers. Stay connected with your family and friends while you call playing Among Us together!

5. Spa Night

Have a themed self-care spa night because we all deserve it during these stressful and unprecedented times. Wear your comfiest pajamas, paint your nails, do a face mask, treat yourself to an appetizing snack, and paint your nails while chatting online with everyone!

6. Holiday Themed Nights

Who said that holidays can’t be memorable online during a pandemic? I hosted an online event for Her Campus Western where we all called, wore ugly Christmas sweaters, decorated Christmas cookies, played some Christmas Kahoot Trivia, and Guess The Christmas Tune. We also had an online Halloween event where everyone wore a Halloween costume and watched a Halloween movie together while we called. You can do something similar like this for any holiday while you call, stay connected and make some new memories!

7. Just Dance & TikTok Night

Remember when playing Just Dance on the Wii was popular when we were little? We recently had a Just Dance and TikTok night that was really entertaining. We are bringing Just Dance back into 2021. You don’t have to have a Wii when you play Just Dance together. There are thousands of Just Dance videos and playlists that you can follow on Youtube. You can use a calling platform such as Google Meet, screen share the Just Dance Youtube videos while everyone laughs at each other dancing. Also, you can make some funny TikToks of everyone dancing. Get ready to dance, reminisce playing Just Dance as a kid while enjoying calling your family and friends!

8. Yoga Night & A Workout Night

Lastly, you can have a yoga and a workout night while you stay connected online. You can search on Youtube for any yoga and workout videos that you would like to follow while you call. Then pick a calling service such as Google Meet, and screen share the Youtube video. This is an excellent way to motivate each other to do some yoga or workout together while having fun staying connected online safely!

Please continue to keep everyone safe while staying at home, only spending time with the people that you live with, limiting the amount of time that you leave your house, wearing masks properly, and social distance from others. Try out these fun online events that will help you stay safely connected to friends and family during the COVID-19 pandemic!
