6 Things to Keep You Motivated to Finish This Term

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Waterloo chapter.

Classes. Snowy walks through campus. Interactions with people before 11 am. The new term has arrived and perhaps you’re already feeling down, longing for those days not too long ago when you were far from the clutches of these evils.

But fear not, my friends, because it doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom. Maybe you’ve already given up on your New Year’s resolutions, but 2019 can still be a great year. Don’t let this winter term defeat you, because there’s plenty of awesome things in store over the next 4 months and beyond:

1. UW Clubs & Societies Day: January 17th and 18th

If you missed out on getting involved with the many clubs and societies that UW has to offer, here’s your second chance! Check out some of your options beforehand at https://feds.ca/clubs/listing and be sure to drop by the Her Campus booth! :)

2. Free Massages at the SLC: January 25th

As part of UW’s Wellness Days initiative, you can get a free massage at the Student Life Centre! I imagine this is going to be pretty busy, but hopefully you can find the time to experience this de-stressing.

3. Winterloo: January 25th – 27th

Waterloo is holding its annual cold weather festival at the end of January, and it’s got a whole line-up of fun activities from Friday to Sunday. Some of these include horse drawn carriage rides, a Beavertails food truck, ice carvings, and something I find particularly interesting by the name of a ‘Mac n’ Cheese Challenge!’

4. Winter Reading Week: February 19th – 22nd

The one good thing about UW’s shortened fall reading “week” is that it makes you appreciate the full reading week that happens in the winter! With Family Day on the 18th, the break extends all the way from Saturday the 16th to Sunday the 24th.

5. Marvel Movies Throughout 2019!!!

I’m sure there are plenty of great movies being released this year, but I’m most looking forward to watching three awesome Marvel movies. Coming to a theatre near you includes; Captain Marvel on March 8th, Avengers Endgame on April 26th, and Spider-Man Far From Home on July 5th.

6. New Music

As always, there’ll be lots of new music dropping this year but a couple big artists expected to release albums in 2019 include Avril Lavigne, Chance the Rapper, Kanye West, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, and The Weeknd.

You can keep going through this term! But don’t do it for me, or your professors, or even the obligation you feel to pursue greater knowledge through higher education. Do it for the ominous Mac n’ Cheese challenge. Do it for the extra-long reading week that other universities normally enjoy in both fall and winter terms. Do it to see Tony Stark run out of oxygen in space and Captain America inevitably get killed off by the Russo brothers.

Greatness awaits you.

Waterloo '22

I'm in my third year of Global Business and Digital Arts at UW and this term I'm Senior Editor for HC Waterloo. I love discussing movies (don't get me started on Parasite or anything made by Taika Waititi) and eating peanut butter cups, preferably at the same time.
I enjoy naps, cake and sarcasm. Besides that I'm in Honours Science at the University of Waterloo!
