How To Cope if Your New Year Hasn’t Been Off to a Great Start

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

Sometimes, life can hit you with unexpected things at unexpected times. Whether it be the beginning of a new year or the end of one. Especially during the new year, it can be hard to work through your problems and at the same time stay positive throughout the rest of the year. Here are some ways to help you cope, if your new year hasn’t had the best start.

1. Take time for yourself

It’s always important to remember for the sake of your mental health, taking time for yourself is the best way to heal and have a clear mind. Take the evenings for a nice bath, or make yourself a nice dinner. Maybe spend an hour before you sleep to watch your favorite show. All of these are ways for you to connect with yourself and take it one day at a time.

2. Do not isolate yourself

Even though it is good to take time for yourself, just remember there’s a difference between taking time for yourself and isolating yourself from your loved ones. Sometimes it helps if you talk to a close friend or family member about how you’re feeling. It helps to open up with someone you trust. Getting things off your chest will make you feel much better.

3. Read a self-improvement book

Personally, 2019 hasn’t been the best start. I decided that maybe I needed some time to read books. When I was browsing through Barnes and Nobles, I turned my attention to the “self improvement” section. The first book that caught my eyes was “13 Ways Mentally Strong Women Don’t Do” by Amy Morin. I started to read the first chapter, and since this book is directed to women, I learned a lot about ways to help me boost my self confidence. Although I only read the first chapter, I felt a lot better throughout the day and decided to seize the day.

4. Pick ONE big resolution

To be honest, you can make a resolution any time of the year. It doesn’t have to be at the beginning of the year. To help you stay motivated, think of one big goal that you want to work on. It can be as little as making your bed everyday to working out everyday. Whatever you feel is something you can commit to for potentially the rest of the year, make that your goal. For example, my goal for the rest of the semester was to work out twice a semester. As I started getting more acquainted to my work and class schedule, I currently work out three times a week. Your goal doesn’t have to be permanent. You can change it throughout the year to fit your needs.

Just because January was off to a bad start, that doesn’t mean the rest of year has to be the same way. Be motivated, open minded and focused on your goals. You can turn your year around because it’s never too late. Good luck!
